He wanted to emulate Flick who succumbs to a dare and sticks his tongue to a frozen pole in “A Christmas Story.”  When the character tries to pull away, he quickly discovers his tongue is stuck.

Spencer Cline, of Sandwich, Illinois, and his friend Cole thought it was just movie magic, but they learned just how real that old pitfall is, the Aurora Beacon-News reports.

“I was just tempted to,” he told the Beacon-News. “I’ve seen the movie ‘A Christmas Story,’ which kind of inspired me.”

When Spencer stuck out his tongue last Tuesday, it instantly adhered to the pole.

I tried that when I was 10 yrs old, too. Twice as I recall. Couldn’t help myself and I didn’t even see the movie.

Well if he didn’t get stuck, it wouldn’t be a reenactment now would it?
Give the kid some respect for attention to detail and thoroughness.

In the article, the boy’s friend went to the nearest house and asked for some hot water. The woman said she didn’t have any!! She didn’t have a faucet with running cold and hot water??

My grandmother told me she did that once when she was a kid.

They had to bring welding torches to heat up the pole and she got in big trouble from her parents.

Lukewarm water... of course.

My initial reaction was to go the anti-freeze route with some vodka.

My mom was paranoid about her kids reenacting eye pokes and hammer strikes from Three Stooges shorts.

Two questions:

Wouldn’t a normal tongue undergo frostbite after a short time adhered to a very cold metal pole?

What’s the aftermath medically... permanent tongue damage? surgery? bandages? schoolyard psychological trauma thru high school?

I can relate. I was about 7. Addicted to Fudgesicles. This was when the ice cream guy rode a pedal driven 3 wheeler with a block of dry ice to keep things cold.

Apparently the Fudgesicle was sitting on the dry ice... One lick was all it took. Some older kid washed it off under a water tap. Was raw for a couple of days.

Didn't tell the parents. They would have probably banned ice cream from the guy. It was 10 cents.

Like the wag once said....

Some people just got to PEE on that electric fence to see if it is true what they say about electric fences & PEE.

(OR something along that line)

Same here, I think a cute girl dared me. It was a steel cable though on a fence.

It is a right of passage for young boys that you take a dare to either get your tongue stuck on cold metal or pee on an electrified fence.
