Stephen Hillenburg, who created SpongeBob SquarePants and the absurd undersea world he inhabited, has died at age 57, Nickelodeon announced Tuesday.
Hillenburg died Monday of Lou Gehrig's disease, also known as ALS, the cable network said in a statement. He was 57.
Hillenburg had announced he had the disease in March 2017. His death comes just weeks after the passing of another cartoon hero in Marvel creator Stan Lee.
An Oklahoma native with a love of both drawing and marine biology, Hillenburg conceived, wrote, produced and directed the animated series that began in 1999 and went on to spawn hundreds of episodes, movies and a Broadway show

did he drop on the deck, and flop like a fish?
too soon?
Outside of Bug Bunny, Donald Duck, et. al., SpongeBob was my favorite. Hillenburg resisted leftists efforts to corrupt the cartoon with PC garbage and kept the show wholesome and clean - and very entertaining and funny.
Nope...Holy mackerel! Go for it!
Dang — 57.
That is REALLY young!
I am too old for SBSP and don’t have kids so I don’t understand the show. I do know it is fabulously popular.
RIP.
He would’ve wanted that said. Dyeayayayayayaya!
RIP.
We have been a Spongebob family for many years.
Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy (Borgnine and Conway) are my favorites.
Also, Patrick Man, who reminds me of Super Grover.
Loved the Flipper sounds for bad language.
Me and my boy bonded over SpongeBob. Thank you, Stephen Hillenburg. RIP
Lou Gehrig’s disease.

You’re bad!
But you made me laugh.
Yes
My kids and now grandkids love SBSP but, the article comparing Hillenburg to Stan Lee saying both were cartoon heroes, is overstating Hillenburg’s talent and influence just a bit.
So these things happen in 3s. Disneys been dead for decades. Who else.
I recently learned that a girl I worked with around 20 years ago died of ALS. She was unusually pretty and also one of the best girl athletes I have ever seen. Very young.
I wonder if being very athletic is connected with ALS. She really was beautiful and the very picture of health.
Damn, this guy was my age (actually, almost exactly Obama’s age, they’re both about 4 months younger than me).
Not much of a fan of his cartoon (my kids loved it...too much, which is my reason for not doing so), but I do offer condolences to his wife and child. They certainly needed him and will miss him.
I lost an aunt when she was 57 and she was quite heavy most of her life. Very pretty when younger but from maybe 30 years old to her passing she carried a lot of extra pounds.
