Some people like the "new car" smell, but apparently a lot of consumers in China hate it. According to the 2018 China Initial Quality Study by J.D. Power, upwards of 10 percent of Chinese drivers complained about the odor. Ford is seeking a patent for a technique that gets rid of the smell after a vehicle is purchased. According to Ford's scientists, the smell comes with the release of a chemical compound found in leather, plastic, vinyl and adhesives. Ford describes the method for eliminating the odor as "baking" the car until the smell goes away.

I believe satire provides some good marketing ideas.
When you look at some of the fad ideas that have been successful over the years, you could imagine somebody at the brainstorming session laughing out loud about some idea proposed as a goof and asking, “Will this get the natives to drop their shekels (or cowrie beads, or whatever)?”
That’s especially true in these days of social networking and internet marketing.
The only reason people like new car smell is because it means they bought a new car. It’s really a gross smell of various nasty stuff venting. Probably not healthy either.
If a car < 10 years the old I consider it new.
Seems like a waste of time/effort/money to cater to some Chinese prisses...the smell goes away all on it’s own withing a few weeks of use....maybe they haven’t heard of air fresheners in China....
Perfumes aren’t meant to attract a man. They’re meant to make a woman feel good. If perfumes were meant to attract a man they’d smell like pizza, steak, and garage.
Our new car smelled like Febreze
They have. I've seen it. I don't think they captured it the way it is in real life though.
A lot of folks may not be aware of this but that 'new car' smell is all the new plastic, vinyl, and rubber off-gassing. We associate that smell with a new car but the truth is those fumes are not good for us.
I'd like to see them process all the parts that go inside or vent into the cabin of the car/truck/bus so that off-gassing is done and over with or at least lowered to an acceptable level.
New cars shouldn't use the "Max" setting on the AC because it only recirculates the air in the cabin. Best to use the normal setting so some air is brought in (10-20%) from outside.
In the summer, especially those who live where it gets really hot, the windows should be opened to allow all those fumes to escape when you start the car. It also helps cool the car down quicker.
Each new car in China will come with swimmer’s nose plugs.
Is that in “eau de toilette” or “eau de parfum” strength?
My car is less than a week old, I am enjoying the new car smell.
Just have your daughters spill some chocolate milk on the back seat floor and not tell you about it. That will cover up the smell for the life of your vehicle.
At least it did for mine. :)
I always thought that if I could capture “new car smell”, bottle it, and market it as a new perfume, I would never be poor or lonely ever again.
For my car, it would be appropriate to use the Eau de Toilette.
Nasty. What is that stuff? Looks like a cross between bird crap and old TP.

Pigeon guano.
Pigeons, uck.
You must have heard the old joke about the statues who were magically brought to life. The first thing they did was grab a pigeon and hold it down so they could revenge themselves.
