Romaine lettuce is unsafe to eat in any form, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday in a broad alert in response to a new outbreak of illnesses caused by a particularly dangerous type of E. coli contamination.

The CDC told consumers to throw away any romaine lettuce they may already have purchased. Restaurants should not serve it, stores should not sell it, and people should not buy it, no matter where or when the lettuce was grown. It doesn’t matter if it is chopped, whole head or part of a mix. All romaine should be avoided.

When my homegrown Romaine starts growing a human ear, I’ll stop growing it.

I pulled up getty images of e coli on stomata of leaf lettuce and spinach. I also found papers specific to romaine that talk about infections in the cuts of leafs that won't wash off. I think the stomata size is key, slightly larger than the e coli.

Other than that the paper talked about used of manure and "biosolids" as the underlying cause.

“there is a new factor involved here.”

Some kind of bioterrorism?

They already have them, for many years. Believe me, if they grow fresh veggies they are GAP certified, even the grease they use on equipment is food grade. There is another Fed/gov program for fresh pack on top of GAP.

Darn it. Just mixed up my semi-weekly salad of Romaine, arugula, tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers (32 cups worth). Guess I’ll eat it anyway, gotta die of something.

No joke..this strain of e-coli is killing people.

The joke is "ALL ROMAINE LETTUCE," no matter where grown or handled. That's a ridiculous statement to make.

I tried OAN's website's (https://www.oann.com/) search engine by typing "lettuce" but came up with "Search Results For Lettuce/ Sorry, but nothing matched your search terms. Please try again with different keywords."

If we really knew where our food comes from and who handles it we’d be plenty surprised. Let alone what we eat at restaurants. I watched a server drop a tuna salad sandwich in a sandwich shop.... face down on the floor..the cook picked it up slathered mayonnaise on it and put it back on the tray for serving....while the two laughed about it.

Vinegar is antimicrobial, so you might get a little protection by choosing some sort of vinaigrette. So’s garlic, salt, honey and oregano. Maybe you can whip something up using all the above, lol. Antimicrobial vinaigrette.

Funny thing is I mainly buy my Romanine from a local supplier (greenhouse). They are also covered.

Something else is up. I love Romaine, but for a broad ban like this something is very odd.

Product from multiple farms is often bagged in the same facility

Also, it usually doesn't state on the package where it's from so that's another concern.

“What’s lettuce?”

Old slang term for money.

That said,if you can’t smear butter on it it’s not on my plate. :-)

Glad I decided on coleslaw for Thanksgiving dinner and not salad, which would have been romaine. I’d hate to have to fight the crowds in the store on Wednesday.

Romaine is about the easiest and most rewarding plant to grow and harvest.
Despite the wording of the CDC warning, home-grown must be OK.
