I don't see anything in the article that explains why these stars would produce more powerful explosions than a normal iron core-collapse supernova. Perhaps the centrifugal force is helping to support the star and is permitting it to mature further than normal and build up a more massive core than the normal limit, or perhaps allow fusible elements around the core to get involved and detonate.

There's a star that's about 1K ly away that "burped" about a 150 years ago.

Its pole is pointed in our direction. The assumption is that it is "soon" to go supernova, and generate a GRB that would still be potent enough to disrupt the gas molecules in the Earth's atmosphere to allow in the solar radiation that is normally blocked.

I don't get it at all. I can't turn my head to the side without getting a little dizzy. If I were to simply spin around I would get sick and wobbly. I must have some sort of inner ear/balance problem.
