A wheelchair used by physicist Stephen Hawking has sold at auction for almost £300,000 ($393,000), while a copy of his doctoral thesis fetched almost £585,000 ($767,000), auctioneer Christies said Thursday.
The motorized chair, used by Hawking after he was paralyzed with motor neuron disease, raised £296,750 in a Christies online auction. It had been expected to fetch up to £15,000.
Proceeds from the chairs sale will go to two charities, the Stephen Hawking Foundation and the Motor Neurone Disease Association.
Hawkings 1965 Cambridge University thesis, Properties of Expanding Universes, sold for £584,750, more than three times its pre-sale estimate, in the online auction.

What did his bedpan go for?
He kept barking about glowbull warming until his last breath.
You have to be pretty dumb to spend that much for a wheelchair.
It reminds me of when Michael Jackson tried to buy the Elephant Man’s remains from the British Museum. He was turned down. Then Howard Stern called up the British Museum to find out how much Dog Boy was selling for.
Pure idiocy.
Does the wheelchair come with his speech synthesizer? I want to sound really smart.
Stephen who?
“You have to be pretty dumb to spend that much for a wheelchair.”
Unless.....you know you can make a profit on it. ;)
They were buying the plastic seat sweat
The kewl thing about his wheel chair is that there
is another one exactly like it some where in the
outer reaches of the universe, with him sitting in it.
Motor neuron disease is the name used in the UK for the sickness known in this country as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, ALS or Charcot’s disease.
Lou gherigs disease, right?
Exactly!.....why would anyone want that stuff let alone pay that.....some sick people out there!
I have a piece of toast that is Jesus in profile...on sale for the bargain price of only $144,000. PM me if you’re interested. :>)
That’s just creepy.
In reality the man did not produce any significant work.
His greatest contribution was in popularizing black holes
“1965 Cambridge University thesis, Properties of Expanding Universes, sold for £584,750.”
Cool. The thesis proved the existence of black holes.
Hawking, like Einstein, got early fame and used the fame to abuse fans. Sad when physics majors lack humility to worship the Creator.
His greatest contribution was in popularizing black holes
I thought that was Hip Hop
