I retired couple down the street have a greyhound, which was a rescue from, I think, Wisconsin. It is one of the mellowest dogs I’ve ever seen.
Horse racing is next...............
Most will probably be put down.
Not to mention the thousands of workers who are about to be homeless...
My wife & I have a retired racer. They do make wonderful pets. We belong to a rescue group called Greyhound Pets of America. There is going to be a huge glut of greyhounds entering the adoption pipelinelikely more than can be absorbed. So a major unintended consequence will be thousands of the hounds being put down.
Greyhounds are large dogs and do require a fenced yard or be on a leash when outside. But when you adopt one, you get an adult pedigreed dog for next to nothing. They are not hyper, rarely bark, and can curl up in a small space. And they are beautiful athletes. If you are thinking of getting a dog, you might want to consider one.
They could ship them to Korea where they would put the “fast” into fast food.
They are wonderful dogs. I hope everyone who voted to eliminate racing considers adopting one.
It’s not like they were running with scissors...
Need some specific homes and the transition reportedly isn’t always easy, but up here in the Northeast most adopted dogs are shipped in from elsewhere. I’m sure we could take in many of these pups.
I see a lot of Greyhounds in my area , they wouldn’t stay homeless very long
They’re not banning the DOG, they’re banning the racing.
Have a neighbor that rescues them.. never owned one myself, but the once I have met seem to have a good temperament.
Unbelievable.
Horrible decision by Florida.
Mass slaughter of greyhounds, just like in MA.
Greyhounds make wonderful pets. They are awesome dogs and love to run. They also love a comfortable couch. The people of Florida are idiots. They are not mistreated at the tracks. Thanks to the idiots in Florida thousands of dogs are now in danger.
Kim’s Korean BBQ has asked about the dogs.
There is a charity here, Going Home Greyhounds, which adopts out greyhounds who are either retired or could not make the cut in training.
Dog racing is legal in West Virginia, about an hour from here.
I read that thousands of greyhounds were euthanized in another state which had banned dog racing. Why didn’t they even attempt to adopt them out? People seem eager to adopt retired greyhounds.
When greyhound racing was banned in Arizona, we found piles of them dead along I-8 by the Algodones dunes for weeks. The breeders were, for the most part, heartless scum.
I go down to Palm Beach pretty regularly; and sometimes when I do, I go over to the Palm Beach Kennel Club. I mostly go to watch the horse races, but sometimes, especially with my granddaughter we go to watch the dog races.
So, sure, most of the Florida population couldn't care less about dog racing; but they get to tell those of us who like it to pound salt.
Welcome to the new Amerika.

My neighbor had a greyhound for some years. Sweet dog.
