Bohemian Rhapsody is proving to be box office dynamite (with a laser beam?).
Twentieth Century Foxs foot-stomping biopic about the influential British rock band Queen is on track to sell an estimated $50 million in tickets at 4,000 theaters in the U.S. and Canada this weekend, far exceeding expectations and easily dethroning Halloween as the No. 1 film in North America. Starring Rami Malek (Mr. Robot) as Queens charismatic frontman, Freddie Mercury, Bohemian Rhapsody will notch the second biggest opening for a music biopic ever, behind 2015s Straight Outta Compton ($60.2 million).
Heading into the weekend, the film had been projected to debut in the $35 million to $40 million range. It cost about $52 million to make. Overseas, it will add about $72.5 million in ticket sales this weekend.

My son saw it on Friday, he said it was great.
Freddie was queer...but I like their music.
I still think it’s a damn shame that his lifestyle killed him. You wanna swing that way, whatever. But just watch what you’re doing so you can keep singing for another couple decades.
North Star Mom? Like Lake Tahoe or some other meaning. Anyway, we got some tickets we may use to go see it.
I might want to see that movie. It’ll be the perfect distraction from everything else. I don’t mind that they are presenting the PG version of Freddie Mercury. I’d prefer dwelling more on the music and showmanship of Queen, vs debaucheries of their private lives. That can be it’s own separate movie for a different audience.
Listen to the intro on the song Liar.
THAT intro made me a fan of this group before I knew anything else about them. Hard Rock, the percussion, the lead guitars, well done.
The Black Queen. Sheer Heart Attack. sealed the deal.
A plus was that they (the musicians) seemed to be having fun too!
“Freddie was queer...but I like their music.”
Actually he was bisexual.
Damn shame about a man of such incredible talent to throw it all away because of his chosen lifestyle. I did like his music and singing. He was a great but sad talent.
Few people could pump-up a crowd like Freddie Mercury, and Bohemian Rhapsody was the song of my Jr. High years.
But I heard this movie only has him in it for only part of it, so I wasn’t really big on seeing it.
The film press is panning the movie because it didn't make Freddy's sexuality the focus of the film. They wanted the movie to be filmed in gay bars, bedrooms and bathhouses. While the film makes it clear that Mercury is gay, the band and their music is the focus, and movie going audiences are giving it great reviews. I'll wait, but will definitely see it.
“Love of My Life” was apparently about a woman.
Supposedly he was devastated after the break up.
I don’t understand how one can be bisexual.
But as a straight guy with my own problems come judgement day, I’ll leave it to God to make the final call on where folks end up.
I am told it does not show plates full of cocaine balanced in the heads of midgets wandering around the infamous parties
It was more his drug use and drinking than anything else
That kind of Close-Up&Gay focus would have quickly overwhelmed the film, and smothered out most of the other sub-plots. That film can be made later, and with a different actor as Freddie.
Sacha Baron Cohen the Brit. comedian wanted to make that type of film now, but two of the original band members did not have that vision at all. Sacha is naturally prone of exaggeration of expression and edgy-attention getting behavior. That is his brand. So perhaps he will produce such a movie in the future.
I saw them live back in the day. Amazing performers.
L
Not really.
He was abused as a teenager, that's probably what turned him.
The movie portrays his gayness as something Freddie was forced into almost against his will, which is clearly not reality either. It makes me wonder what the surviving memebers think of all this and the way his sexuality has overshadowed so much of the band’s legacy.
I think he was confused?
Saw the movie yesterday. It was well done with a focus on the music and writing/producing of it. It touched on Freddie’s sexuality but didn’t dwell on it. I thought it was a pretty good movie. The music was great too.
