A study from the Jaffe Food Allergy Institute at New York's Mount Sinai hospital found that from 1997 to 2008, peanut allergies tripled from 1-in-250 children to 1-in-70.
Among children, allergies to peanuts and other types of food continues to climb, but experts say there is some progress in controlling or preventing life-threatening reactions.
A food allergy, defined as a reaction that occurs when the immune system attacks harmless proteins, is an ailment that drugmakers are working to treat. One method involves treatments that introduce small amounts of peanuts to allergy sufferers, which gradually increases the amount to build toleranc e.
The exploding segment of the population suffering from certain food ailments is skyrocketing, and experts are stumped on the reasons why. A study from the Jaffe Food Allergy Institute at New York's Mount Sinai hospital found that from 1997 to 2008, peanut allergies tripled from 1-in-250 children to 1-in-70.

Nothing in the story about the “why” except for the “cleanliness theory,” which I’m sure you’ve heard before.
The story really doesn’t live up to its headline.
When I was a kid my grandmother used to put cow manure on her garden every year. I can’t tell you how many new potatoes and carrots I ate after wiping the dirt off on my shirt.
I am not an anti-vaxxer...but the current state of immunization policy in this country is freakishly dystopian. Toooo many vaccines and far too little accountability on the part of the companies and governments endorsing them.
Sounds like they still don’t know.
A friend of mine died in the early 90’s due to his peanut allergy.
He ate at a Chinese restaurant across the street from work. Ate there for years.
He always reminded them of his peanut allergy. They assured him that there were no peanuts in his orders.
One night, someone decided to use peanut butter as a filler in his eggrolls.
Drove himself to the ER and died on the table.
When my dear late husband was little, he found he had a severe peanut/nut allergy. At the time he was the only one in school who had it. ( he was 90 when he passed, so it was a long time ago.)
My daughter, who is now 60, also has the allergy and in school she was the only one she knew of who had it.
Both husband and daughter learned to live with it
But now?? So common!! Would love to know specific reasons why.

Roll them in dirt, feed them peanut butter, let the dog lick their face, let them eat off the floor.
And most important, throw them in the air asap until they laugh. A.S.A.P. Autism preventative. Everyone used to do it, though they didn’t know why.
Yeah. We age actual mud pies - tasted them in the ‘50s. Never got sick. Couldn’t afford to get sick. The peanut allergy thing is pretty weird.
I knew there was something in those peanuts Carter was giving away.
Thank goodness the FEC put a stop to it (considered a form of bribery) before more people were exposed...

Peanut protein powder
[Snip]...In a clinical trial, researchers did what might seem like a recipe for disaster: administer tiny daily doses of peanut protein powder to patients with peanut allergies. The amount was gradually increased over six months to build tolerance.
Also wonder if it is from soy based formula given to babies. Soybeans and peanuts have some of the same allergens.
Or maybe it is because of baby food. Kids used to eat what mom and dad ate just mashed a little. They also used to be put on solid food as fast as possible. Nursing was physically demanding and put a major drain on the mother. So while they might continue to nurse they also supplemented with solid food keep the baby fuller longer.
Then again it might be something else altogether.
Something like the A1/A2 milk.
People who have trouble with A1 milk (from Holstein cows) can drink A2 milk (from jersey cows) with no trouble.
Perhaps they bred something out or into the peanut that either used to prevent the problem or now causes the problem.
There are so many variables. And they change from person to person.
