Ian Kar, a New York-based product manager who was sent the scammy email... said he was pretty sure his password was included in one of the big leaks in the past few years — databases have been stolen from LinkedIn, Yahoo, and eBay, for example. You can check whether your password is in one of these leaked databases over at the website Have I Been Pwned.
Basically, the attackers don't actually have video of you or access to your contacts, and they haven't been able to install malicious code on your computer. In reality, they're taking a password from a database that's available online, sending it to you, and hoping you're scared enough to believe their story and send them bitcoin.

Amusing anecdote of President Suharto of Indonesia back in the late sixties. He visited Moscow and was “set up” with some very lovely ladies and filmed. The Russians tried to use this for blackmail but did not understand his culture.
Suharto asked if they would make a copy for him to take back home. It was a massive fail.
Probably more actually, know they got my common pw when yahoo got hacked because Amazon locked my acct until I changed it and probably the Expedia hack.
Now I'm using a borrowed laptop, hope temporarily, and that won't make any difference. And I have NEVER stored my pw on my hd. But I get sick of writing them down every time I change and don't bother with others.
And I'm not invincible. Those programs you buy would have saved me from Blaster way back or they got around Norton, can't remember, are only good until there are new hacks they didn't code for and so on.
And if I order online, sometimes another email mimicking it gets in. And they almost do a perfect copy of my isp but didn't pass the smell test and I called to verify.
What a pain. I quit updating flash. And I click on links in emails sometimes anyway. Those I really really trust. Keep the camera on my desktop pc covered but don't know where it is on this Macbook Pro 2011?
Tnx for the reminder, SunkenCiv. I will change the pw on my email acct. Wish I could remember what I use for gmail should be what works on yt and Google Maps but if you are using a different computer, you have to jump through more hoops to use it there. Same w/my credit union; evidently they only allow one device. So I use the phone one which is not as nice but useful nonetheless.

It is in some ways a relief (no pun intended) that the ABSURDLY strong sexual urge we all felt in our teens diminishes as the years pass.

I received one of those threats. It had one of my throw-away passwords, so I knew the hack was real.
Unless I payed the ransom, a damning video would be released... my attitude — go for it — I really don’t give a # even if such a video could possibly exist.

I was raised Catholic in the 50s, went in Navy in 56 and after boot camp ‘disovered’ Tijuana. Then it was aboard ship and a Westpac cruise and I made up for 17 years of ‘sainthood’ in 6 mos.... Luckily the only thing that ‘saved’ me from complete exhaustion etc was we normally only spent a few days in port at a time...
Probably would have ‘killed’ myself had I been on shore duty during that period.
Wouldn’t trade a moment of it though....
Yeah of course now after reflecting my conscience comes into play and I remember why it is not just a sin that affects me.
The women in the industry are treated brutally many times and it is ONE of the reasons that I don’t really see it as a “free enterprise” offering, like booze and cigarettes.
Though those take their toll on innocents also.
Like I said in another post, I am VERY GLAD that the insane urge from the teens diminishes as the years go by and that at the ripe middle age of 50, I can focus my attention on worthier endeavors.
Odd thing, a lifelong casino goer, I lost ALL urge to go maybe 3 years ago. Usually doesn’t go away, that urge. I guess i just got sick of giving away money.

I’m less salty mouthed but concur.
If you don’t things you are ashamed of you can’t be blackmailed.
The scam is automated, and relies on data mined from a few large data breaches. Since the email that got hit was my work email, I knew it was BS, because I never do any, uh, extracurricular surfing (porn) from work, and the CPU has no camera. The email server also isn't accessible from outside, unless the IT dep't sets it up for the users. And the last thing I'd want is access from home to my work email. :^)
Yeah I gotta stop talking like one of the Dead End Kids on here.

Boy are they barking up the wrong tree. I don’t have a web cam don’t own a laptop...
Even the text was computer generated, with spelling and grammar errors and odd turns of phrase a human would probably never use. I found that two of my three active email addresses had been compromised.

I get notices from CreditKarma regularly now that my data has been compromised by theft from one company or another.

But NOW there are scams in renting and selling houses. The seller or renter is “in Africa on missionary work”. That’s why the prices are so low.
The list of scams and cheats and outright thievery never ends.

The day I bought my computer, I put a bandaid over the camera hole. It looks like a grey wall when you attempt to use it. The Mike is also turned all the way down. Go ahead, video away!

Do any of you every look at your wives, girlfriends, mistresses and wonder at all about the lives of those women?
Or to the men who used/paid young men for sexual... ever wonder how much you may have caused his life spiral?
