My personal favorite is, “Can We Still Be Friends.” Kind of a quirky rhythm but also extremely catchy.
And Badfinger’s “Straight Up” album is a true classic. Used copies used to go for $40 back in the late 70’s/early 80’s before they finally got reissued on CD after Apple got their act together.
But, not The Monkees, yet again.
No. 9. Good culling out of the “who”, not the rock group. John Prine is folk music mainly. Saw him in the 70’s and he was good.
Janet Jackson - “Escapade” was a really good song. Otherwise, don’t remember anything else worth remembering.
Rage Against the Machine - more like communists rage against capitalism which is making them very rich. Isn’t that Tom Morriello? He wears a cap with a communist star on it or on his coat. Upper Deck has him on two special cards with his commie stuff. Who does he think he is, Michael Stipe?
Devo? - Whip It, the national theme song of the Sado-Maschocist crowd. I actually recently heard another song of theirs that was pretty good. I no idea what it’s title was.
Kraftwerk? Is that where they make Kraft Cheese, or an old Nazi war factory?
Stevie Nicks - as part of Fleetwood Mac, she was great (saw them in 1977). By herself, not so great. Christie McVie was pretty good on her own.
The Cure? Who?
Radiohead? Who?
Todd Rundgren - a couple catchy tunes but R&R Hall of Fame, questionable
I’d take Roxette of Roxy Music who I never heard of.
Slime Pickens this year.
DEVO yes! Its about time.
Devos Smart Patrol is one of my all-time faves period.
How many rockn rollers had more big hits, 1963-72, than Tommy James and The Shondells? Songs that were about us and what we did and what we became - not Norwegian boners or Alligator Rock or revisited 1700s Scottish moors bagpipe reels - American songs like I Think Were Alone Now, Mony Mony, Hanky Panky, Tighter, Tighter, Sweet Cherry Wine, and Draggin The Line.
Songs that carried us from junior high school into our first full-time, adult jobs.
Just as Stevie Nicks supporting disabled Marines veterans Tommy James and the Shondells started reading the Bible and became Christians.
Jaded DJs spread the word that Crystal Blue Persuasion was about - wink, wink, say no more - drug abuse.
James saw similarities in Ezekiel and Revelations 19 and the separate words crystal and blue and the persuasion John The Evangelist used.
So, use opiates until you fall off that Horse and youre even-money to join the RRHOF but if you write about the eternal verities youll playing high-schools gyms to bused-in seniors in Morristown, NJ.
A few years ago, I realized 40% of the RRHOFers were signed and repped by Ahmet Ertegun.
So thats why Etta James, a backup singer, is in and Connie Francis isnt.
Devo and Kraftwerk both set tones and trends....big ones
LL Cool J no thanks
Stevie Nicks is already in
The Cure.....yes...
Todd Rungren....yes but he is an asshole
Def Leppard ....if only for all the women Ive seen gyrate and slink clothed and not so much to Pour Some Sugar on me....I owe them royalties for that one
The Zombies....most deserving on that list....I still listen to their stuff...not just the hits....subtle artistry
Rage....my kids love em but not the message...that commie Morrell CSN sure play a guitar
MC 5....more commies I never got the love honestly....its a Detroit thing
John Prine....witty nauseating leftist....he already owns Americana along with a Steve Earle....no thanks !
Radiohead is like The Pixies or Violent Femmes....GenX or younger ....throw em a bone...I only know their two hits
Janet Jackson ...not yet
Chaka Kahn ...yes already yes and only cause she was hot with her ample bosom doing its own gyrating on American Bandstand 1970 or so
She really hit her stride with Winwood in his white duke phase
More on Devo.....they create a new wing of college gator music ...and I actually did it....plus Ubertalenteed Mark Mothersbaugh is almost 70
Kraftwerk......they are the embryo of techno based sound.....no question
Without them no:
Joy Division.....another major influential band with a very tragic subtext
New Order
Bauhaus
Love and Rockets
The Cure
Depeche Mode
Souisxe and the Banshees
Blondie
Brian Eno
Roxy Music who yes are indeed hall of fame worthy and then some
David Bowie RIP.....Heroes and Cat People and Station to Station you can hear Kraftwerk
Human League
Soft Cell
Erasure
Even Radiohead a bit
Tangerine Dream is another instrumental band of that era and more psychedelic but also influenced a lot..
But Kraftwerk were more Teutonic minimalism
Thats my rant.....
Joy Division....I cant promote them enough....Ian Curtis ...Im sixty years old now son..a year younger than you woulda been had you survived...you had balls to prevail as much as you did with your disease....today theyd give you large CBD dose....what a sad tale
No way does Janet Jackson have anything to do with Rock and Roll.
She’s already in as part of Fleetwood Mac.
Consider this:
Bad Company, Guess Who and Doobie Brothers are still not in and this year’s nominees includes Janet Jackson and Todd Rungren!
This has really become a joke.
Add to that list Grand Funk Railroad. But how could they be inducted when Mark and Don won’t even speak to each other.
I love Todd Rundgren’s work from Naz onto many other albums.
Not all, but many. His music and lyrics helped me make sense of the world during my late teens. His melodies were wonderful ‘It Wouldn’t Have Made Any Difference’, Just One Victory, Fair Warning, A Wizard A True Star, and many others. Funny thing is, he was never that well known to the average rock or pop music listener. I rarely found anyone who knew much about Todd accept for ‘I Saw The Light’ or some throw away tune “I Wanna Play the Drums All Day’, a song I have zero use for. Todd was an acquired taste.
Sort of like the group “Sparks” a brother duo Todd also produced.
My heart was broken last year though, when Todd said Trump voters were ‘not welcome’ at his concerts. Not that I would ever have gone to one now, at my age (62), but it was quite unwelcoming. Todd has become bitter and set in his ways.
I have learned to separate the man he is now, from the younger man who created all that music I adored. He can’t take that memory away from me now, no matter how proud he is of hating all conservatives.
Good to know -- thanks.
Mrs. Hugin and I saw him a few years ago. He may be talented but he’s a huge a-hole. We were staying at a casino and he was playing so we decided to go. Most of the audience were just people like us who knew a few of his songs and decided to go. His contempt for the audience was palpable. He started out saying “I don’t do requests. Don’t ask me to play “Hey Leroy”, that’s not even the name of the song.” He then proceeded to play about an hour of jazz-fusion arrangements. By the time he was done with that half the audience had left, which he made fun of, then played some of his songs, the being Light in Your Eyes. He never did play “We gotta get you a woman” or “Bang on the Drum”, his two biggest hits. The whole thing was a big FU to anyone who wasn’t a hard core fan.
Mrs. Hugin and I now just call him “that a-hole”.
This is getting ridiculous. Nobody even cares anymore honestly, it’s turned into nonsense ...
Many ‘Legacy Performers’ like Todd become arrogant, thinking that this signifies nonchalance and worldly sophistication.
Most times it just signifies bad manners and someone not liking their job. Last time I looked on YouTube, Todd was a 70 y/o man still dressing on stage as though he was 25, with sleeveless denim shirts, open in front. Tied Dyed wisps of hair, parted in the middle.
Not all are that way. I get the impression, performers like Carol King is someone who still gives live shows ,and is just fine playing her ‘Greatest Hits’ for the audience. She knows what we want to hear, so she gives it to us.
Didn’t like much after the mid-’70s, but there were exceptions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=inu7qTlXX1w&frags=pl%2Cwn
Yep. In contrast I saw Ringo Starr’s All Star Band about 10 years ago. He came out upbeat, and you could tell he loved being in front of an audience. The first third of the show was him standing and singing all the songs he sang with the Beatles, which was what most of the audience wanted to hear. Then he said “Now I get to do what I love most, play drums” and he got behind the set while they played each member’s two or three biggest hits. The last part of the show he became a front man again and sang all his solo songs. It was a great show and everyone left happy.
My favorite Ringo vid (lol)
