Alessandro Strumia, the physicist in question and a professor at Pisa University in Italy, gave his presentation to a crowd at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), one of the word's most important nuclear physics organizations. The topic of the day was gender in physics, and the crowd was mostly composed of women, according to The Guardian.
Over the course of several slides of his presentation, which are available online, Strumia laid out an IQ-based argument for disparities between men and women in physics.
"Physics graduates have top IQ," he wrote. "It's needed."
He pointed to a study that suggests that while men and women have similar average IQs, men vary more, with very slightly more men at the low and high ends of the spectrum. This is the truth behind gender differences in physics, he argued.
And efforts to bring gender balance to physics are the result of "cultural Marxism" and politicians "promoting a victimocracy" and "ideology" ignoring "blind human biology," he added.
He further argued that men are discriminated against in physics, presenting data suggesting that men at CERN have more total citations, on average, than women. (The raw number of times one's papers have been cited is sometimes considered a mark of prestige in academia.) He also argued that a single example where a woman with fewer citations than him was hired over him was evidence of this bias. (In fact, a woman, Donna Strickland, was awarded part of the Nobel Prize in physics this morning (Oct. 2), for the first time in 55 years.)

Lol!
That will be awesome indeed!
Yeah, but she was Polish, so that's an exception.
That thing with the tire changing could also apply to many if not most liberal guys.
:)
Nature made the decision that survival skills of women were narrower. There ARE high IQ women - but NOT as many. There are violent criminal women - but not in a high percentage. There are idiot low IQ women - but NOT as many.
Until ‘intelligence’ can be downloaded directly into the brain we'll have fewer women at the top of any science or math field. Or chess grandmasters etc etc...
Nature also made men taller... Not that there aren't tall women... OR ... short men but... well you get the idea.
My understanding is that this guy is not entirely wrong about one particular thing that he mentioned. Men do you have a higher proportion of their population at both the high and low end of the IQ scale. Women tend to be more bunched toward the middle. Since theoretical physics is something that only extraordinarily intelligent people can excel at, it seems logical that more of the stars in that field would be men. Note, however, that this most certainly does NOT mean that there cannot be women who are geniuses in physics, and who are capable of winning Nobel prizes on the merits. Of course there are, and there will continue to be. But, ON AVERAGE, there will be more men doing high level physics and thus winning Nobel prizes.
“It’s a common conceit that a person who is an expert in one subject also knows absolutely everything about every other subject.”
Note that it is also common for someone who is an expert in any field to also be conceited.
“Just because you think it’s true, doesn’t make it right to say it.
There, fixed it for you.
RALPH: Why? Because I was the only one brave enough to make that idiotic statement, thats why.
ALICE: Ralph, do you think if theyd asked me that question, I would have said that I was the boss?
RALPH: How could you? How could you, Alice? Youre a woman, remember that. Women arent bosses, Men are bosses. Men.
They do it all. Men run this world, Alice. Men.
They are responsible for the shape the worlds in. Men.
ALICE: Well, Im sure glad to hear one of you admit it.
RALPH: It just kills you, dont it? It just kills you that youre a woman. That instead of being a leader like a man, you gotta be a follower. Thats what women are, you know. Followers. Men. Theyve done it all. Done it all. All the great inventions. Men. Men have done all the great things since the beginning of time.
Ill give you a perfect example.
Thered be no America if it wasnt for Christopher Columbus.
ALICE: Thered be no Christopher Columbus if it wasnt for his mother.
Im laughing at the title. The physicist isnt an expert about who excels in his field of endeavor.
It’s a common conceit that a person who is an expert in one subject also knows absolutely everything about every other subject.
And this is especially prevalent in lawyers and physicists...
Not an exact analogy but of the 300 best chess players that have ever lived exactly 1 is female
I was very good in physics in college... and regularly beat men in chess in untimed games, and I’m female. In timed games I probably wouldn’t do as well. For some weird reason, though, I was terrible in chemistry... which should have been easier.
I love physics because it’s the practical application of math.
Growing up I was the only person who loved word problems in class... everyone else groaned. But dry problems with no associated “use” I didn’t do so well with, while people who struggled with word problems seemed to do just fine with pure numbers. If every problem on our tests had been a word problem, a “practical” problem, I would never have dropped below an A in math tests... that’s just the way I was. People approach problems differently- partly due to our sex, partly due to our maturity, partly due to a whole host of factors. But education is so often centrally planned that unless kids get a rogue teacher, those who struggle with the standard methodology but who would excel under a different methodology never get discovered.
I think we may see more balance in education if schools were more flexible - boys and girls mature at different ages so it is most likely a mistake to assume we are ready for math at the same age or ready for grammar at the same age... or that the approach used for one person is going to be the best for another. And if forced into a subject at too early an age, a person may struggle and give up on trying to excel in it when if it had been postponed a year or two later the person might do very well.
Math for women is easy. How much money does my husband make?
I get it all. : )
Outstanding page you have.
Enjoyed every picture on it.
G’day young lady!
My daughter is graduating with a degree in engineering physics with a 3.98 GPA from one of the best engineering schools in the country, and has accepted a position with NASA working in Mission Control.
My son couldn’t solve a physics problem to save his life. Maybe these generalizations are not all that useful.
I say if you can do it, do it....no need to qualify that women aren't good at physics....because if you say that, then I can say men aren't good at nuturing and should never get custody of children.....
we can play this game all day...
You have to think in terms of populations not individuals.
There is also the issue of motivation.
My daughter got her PhD in Chemistry. Most of her friends from high school through undergraduate didn’t do anything even remotely like that. It used to bother her, that she had so few friends who should could commiserate with about the trials & tribulations of doing such a discipline.
I have two sons.....One who is assertive, driven, successful, loves to advance his life....high asperations. ...and he’s done well in reaching those.
I have another son who is very laid back, easy going, a peace maker, artsey and enjoys his own company. Great with people...but needs a fire under his butt as he’s not naturally driven unless it’s necessary.
