Mormon no more: Tabernacle Choir renamed in big church shift

The well-known Mormon Tabernacle Choir was renamed Friday to strip out the word Mormon in a move showing the faith’s new president is serious about ending shorthand names for the religion that have been used for generations by church members and previously promoted by the church.

The gospel singing group will now be called the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said in a statement. It’s a nod to the home of the choir for the last 150 years, the Tabernacle, located on church grounds known as Temple Square in downtown Salt Lake City.

My sister was LDS. When she passed away her husband had a memorial service in the LDS church community hall, mostly different people getting up and talking about her- that was fine and it was nice, but she was a very dedicated person to her faith and I was expecting more of a service. Nope. Then at the end it was announced the time of her- whatever they called it was going to be the next morning in the Temple. Then it dawned on me the memorial we went to was for people she worked with and others that were not LDS. They had what they considered to be her “real” service the next morning. Strange and hurtful feeling to feel left out of your sister’s funeral.

I will say the architecture of the main temple looks stunning.

Heard the Choir perform at the Mann Center in Philly about eight years ago - sounded great outside of a summer evening - must be fantastic music in the “Temple” itself.....

With younger generations so incredibly undereducated, getting rid of that spurious “Mormon” denotation, can bring a whole new bunch of deluded people into the fold. One of their off-shoots cal l s itself “Community of Christ”. Sounds good, til you get to the fact that they still insist on the book of Mormon being scripture.

This is not correct. Mormon funerals are not held at a temple, and anyone can attend.

Mike Lee is Mormon...one of his great grandfathers was the only person executed for the mountain meadows massacre.

Do they not want to keep using the word from Joseph’s Myth? I have been studying LDS for a few years and know quite a bit about them. It’s amazing that anyone can believe Smith was a true prophet of the biblical God, but I think most of it is because of being marked as an anti-Mormon once one leaves.

They had some sort of deal for her the next morning that we were not invited to, the announcement was directed at the LDS members. I have no idea what it was, I was not invited, nor was the rest of the family or friends that were not LDS. Her own daughters that were not LDS were not invited.

I have had LDS tell me before that is not how it is done but that is how it was done. It may not have been an LDS thing- her husband may have planned it that way for all I know. I don’t know much about the LDS...more than some but still very little.
