With “The Conners” slated to debut this month sans Roseanne Barr, the remaining cast members are reflecting on their new direction after Barr’s firing.
“It was awkward but not awkward,” Laurie Metcalf, who plays Jackie Harris, told People about filming without Barr. “It was right but not right, wrong but not wrong.”
As the series is expected to address, Barr’s character is killed off and the family is left to recover.
“Any sadness that we feel over what we’ve lost we’re hopefully channeling in an honest way into the show,” added Sarah Gilbert, who returned to her role as Darlene Conner and a producer on the show. “And our show has always been able to deal with heavy topics, particularly for a sitcom.”
Back in May, ABC swiftly canceled “Roseanne” after Barr, 65, posted racist tweets about Valerie Jarrett. The network called her behavior not in line with its values. Then came discussion of whether the show could return without Barr — who played a pivotal role both in front of and behind the camera. Barr ultimately chose to remove herself so the show could survive.
“That was a very big deal,” said John Goodman, who plays Dan Conner. “To give us a chance.”
Goodman, 66, adds he and the remaining cast didn’t want to let the series end until they were truly finished. “There was a debt owed to this fictional family. We’ll figure out how to get through this, the family will, everybody will. We want to finish telling this story.”
Of the remaining stars, Goodman appeared to have the most difficulty with the cancellation news.
“I had a bad time for about a month,” he recalled. “And then other things started going wrong. I fell down the steps and broke a rib. My wife got sick

A very questionable assertion. The network wanted her out. They found a way to make that happen.
Will not last. Jackie is funny. Darlene character awful. Other drunk daughter awful. Granddaughter character awful. Grandson wearing womens clothes dumb. I wont watch it.
“The ratings will be somewhere south of Murphy Brown.”
That means they’ll have to put BJ’s wife on.
Good thing I’m not watching THIS piece of Obama either.
They should have put more effort into saving Roseanne Barr's position. Instead, they will be blamed for killing the franchise.

Actually I was just thinking Roseanne could do another show using her character. They killed her off so what if she is “ given an assignment” as a guardian angel to various middle American families.
She could help one family and then move on. They can’t see her but she can help them through problems using humor and ridiculous solutions.
It’ll get more awkward when they’re cancelled in 3 weeks and have no idea why....
I never watched the show, but I know about Roseanne.
Is there anybody else in the cast who has the spark, the charisma to make you want to see that show?
Every still shot I see of the remaining cast, makes them look as though they took the rest of Roseanne’s Ambien, and have not snapped out of their sleepwalking trance.
You want to send somebody in that room with an Airhorn ready to make some noise.

I hear Ted McGinley is alive. Wouldn't be the first time he came late to a show that had jumped the shark.
Who did they think they are? The Hogan Family? It survived Valerie leaving because of Jason Bateman. No one in this crew is that good
Probably not as akward as people watching. But good luck with that.
They killed off Dan Conner in the original series, but he made a full recovery.
Rosanne could also come back from the dead if the money was right.
