A Georgia high school football player died Sunday evening after sustaining a severe brain injury from a game Friday night, Atlanta’s FOX 5 reported. Dylan Thomas, 16, was a linebacker for Pike County High School in Zebulon, which is about an hours’ drive south of Atlanta. On Friday, Pike County played against a varsity team from Peach County High School.

Thomas collided with another player in the middle of the game, but returned to the field, his uncle told FOX 5. When Thomas was sitting on the sidelines, his arm and leg went numb and he collapsed, Thomas’ uncle said.

Happened to a classmate of mine in senior year in HS. He was in a coma for about 45-60 days, and after prayer vigils around the clock, he came out of the coma with a full recovery. He was named the home coming king and graduated on time. Truly one of the greatest miracles of my life.

The safety Nazis wanted to ban (college) football in the 1920s (and earlier), because several people would die on the field every year.

Cool story.

This poor kid was probably bleeding in the brain until lights out.

Very sad.

That was before the Flying Wedge was outlawed under Teddy Roosevelt (I think.)

The Flying Wedge was outlawed in the 1890s, but the routine deaths persisted for a few decades.

Teddy Roosevelt threatened to ban football in 1904. Again because people were dying on the field. Many of our modern rules can be traced to this.

The case of my classmate’s recovery became at least a fairly big local story. I recall it being on the local Seattle tv news, and recall one of the Seahawks coming to the school and giving him an autographed football.

If I recall correctly, he wound up being on a double date the night after the game and he simply slumped over. I went to a Christian Private school, and we talked and prayed about it every day. Personally? I was convinced he’d die, never recover. Truly a miracle. I remember hanging out with him after we graduated...was surreal.

I knew a guy back in the 1980s who told me that his son wanted to play football in high school. He told his son:" no way. You are not going to beat yourself up and have injuries that may bother you the rest of your life so some coach can get a trophy."

‘Again because people were dying on the field.’

many things could be done to mitigate this type of occurence, though it must be stated numerous sports and activities lead to unforeseen tragedy (cycling accidents come to mind)...eliminate kickoffs, the three point stance, tackling below or above the mid point of the body, usage of the newest helmet technology; it’s first necessary for the culture of football to want to do it...

Noting that I do not own Apple stock, also noting that I am not familiar with Apple Watch health monitoring features, perhaps athletes should consider wearing Apple Watches? And wear them all the time, not just while playing. Canary in the cage.

Insights welcome.

Some will add this tragedy to their brief against football, but the fact is that boys want to test themselves and they find a way. My oldest son was a bike racer and an adrenaline junkie. He died in an accident 16 years ago. Guys like my son race cars, climb mountains, play contact sports, and go to war when they’re called. You pray that they’ll be safe. They leave a great hole in the world when it goes wrong, but what can you do? At the end of the day, what the hell can you do?

"Just say no."

Say no to what? My son was a grown man of 32 when he died.

My first job at the hospital at which I worked for 25 years was in the Neuropathology Department. It was a very famous hospital staffed by world famous physicians and surgeons and I learned at least a bit while in the department.

IMO this CTE matter shouldn't be seen as a right wing *or* left wing issue...just a medical issue.

Let respected Neurologists,Neurosurgeons and Neuropathologists work it out.
