The safety Nazis wanted to ban (college) football in the 1920s (and earlier), because several people would die on the field every year.

That was before the Flying Wedge was outlawed under Teddy Roosevelt (I think.)

Teddy Roosevelt threatened to ban football in 1904. Again because people were dying on the field. Many of our modern rules can be traced to this.
