A US Navy ship had an "unsafe" interaction with a Chinese warship Sunday while the US vessel was conducting a freedom of navigation operation near the disputed Spratly Islands in the South China Sea, causing the US ship to maneuver "to prevent a collision," according to US defense officials.
"A (People's Republic of China) Luyang destroyer approached USS Decatur in an unsafe and unprofessional maneuver in the vicinity of Gaven Reef in the South China Sea," Capt. Charles Brown, a spokesman for US Pacific Fleet, told CNN in a statement confirming the incident.
Brown said the Chinese warship "conducted a series of increasingly aggressive maneuvers accompanied by warnings for the Decatur to depart the area."
He added that the Chinese destroyer "approached within 45 yards" of the front of the US ship, adding that the Decatur "maneuvered to prevent a collision."
"Our forces will continue to fly, sail and operate anywhere international law allows," he said.
This incident comes amid heightened US-China tensions over a broad range of issues. Chinese ships often shadow US vessels during freedom of navigation operations but those interactions are usually considered safe.

45 yards?
That’s way close. Stupid close.
I was in the Arctic and we were operating in the ice with a Canadian Icebreaker, the Grosilliers.
Our captains were trying to figure out who’s dick was bigger and started doing stupid things in the ice. The Canadian breaker came within about 50 yards of our stern breaking ice at about 10 knots.
Good thing he knew his ice. Multiyear ice tends to toss the boat to one side of your trackline or the other.
It’s past time for a luyang destroyer to meet the bottom of the ocean.

USS Decatur
Time to make a call to the “silent service” and disappear the ChiCom destroyer
For anyone in the know: would the us vessel be at battle stations with such a provocative act by the Chinese?
Yes. GQ would be set. They may decide to set a condition on it, but probably not.
Done right, the collision alarm would have been triggered, which would have meant the repair lockers would have been manned.
The only way the Chinese can destroy anything is with a Kamikaze move
If the ChiComs want to play are ramming the it is high time to take the USS Missouri out of retirement as it has 12 inch thick belt armor and would go through their ships like toilet paper.
I was thinking the same thing. There was a good amount of hard contact in the East Med and Black Sea with the Soviet Navy.
There is a video on YouTube of a Krivak class frigate making hard contact while the loudspeakers are blasting what sounds like a Russian version of the Beatles Back in the SSSR.
45 meters for a ship at sea is CLOSE.
How much of that technology did they get from SpyFi and the Clintons?
A little bit of ‘tickling the dragon’s tail’?
It is refreshing to have one our ships change course for a change.
Are the fuel systems on the Missouri intact?
Note the BBs are in storage more or less and there is a now an American submarine featuring the name Missouri.
