The Federal Aviation Administration would be required to set new minimum requirements for seats on airplanes under legislation to be considered in the House this week, possibly giving passengers a break from ever-shrinking legroom and cramped quarters.
The regulation of seat width and legroom is part of a five-year extension of federal aviation programs announced early Saturday by Republican and Democratic leaders of the House and Senate committees that oversee the nations air travel.
Congress faces a Sept. 30 deadline to keep FAA programs running. The Senate will also need to take up the bill this week or both chambers will need to pass a short-term extension.
The bill would prohibit the involuntary bumping of passengers who have already boarded a plane. But in a nod to the power of the commercial airliners, lawmakers declined to include language that would have prohibited airlines from imposing fees deemed not reasonable and proportional.

Why is Congress wasting tax dollars and time on this. Airline customers should have walked away from small seats and no leg room.
Unfortunately I don't have that option. I work in Arizona but report to DC, so I have to fly back there several times a year. Fortunately the McCain Nonstop is still flying between PHX and DCA.

Same here. Between the TSA and the steerage conditions, I'll pass. Got a 750-mile round trip coming up and it will be by auto.

Yep. The miracle of deregulation. When I was a kid in the late 50s and early 60s, Dad would buy a new car every two years and we would set off on a 2-3week journey stopping to visit all of our far flung relatives. There was no way you could fly a family in those days unless you were a millionaire (anon that meant something back then). It was far cheaper to buy a new car and drive all over the country.
Did you know that’s how Cornelius Vanderbilt made his fortune? Steamship fares were regulated very high in the early days. Steamship companies made floating palaces with sky high fares that only the very rich could afford. He made fares economical for Everyman and became a billionaire (in today’s dollars).
I was stuck on a United flight once with a person so obese the arm rest was buried in his fat to the point I was left with lass than half of a tiny seat at best. The stewardess did not want to move me to a better situation because the vacant seat available was a premium seat.
I flew regularly for the past 30+ years and in that time frame flying has become a torture at best

Might be too roomy for you. I’m a big guy and I drove an Echo for over a decade; got it up to 261K before it was sold to a handyman who was still driving it last time I saw him. (There was a hatchback version of the Echo sold in Europe under of the Yaris name.) The only problem I had was the legroom; my right leg would get cramped on trips of over 50 miles, and the car had no cruise control.
