3 hurt in Pa. court shooting leave hospital; gunman identifiedThe gunman, Patrick Dowdell, 61, was shot and killed by a German Township police officer
MASONTOWN, Pa. Three civilians wounded when a gunman opened fire outside a crowded courtroom have been released from hospital, officials said Thursday.
The three were taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, West Virginia, following Wednesday's shooting in southwestern Pennsylvania's Fayette County. The two men, ages 35 and 47, and a 39-year-old woman were all released Wednesday night, the hospital said.
The gunman, Patrick Dowdell, 61, of Masontown, was shot and killed by a German Township police officer. Another officer who was wounded, Masontown police Sgt. R. Scott Miller, was being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Police kill gunman after he shoots 4, including cop, in court lobby Dowdell entered the lobby in Masontown around 2 p.m. Wednesday with a handgun drawn and opened fire, authorities said. He had been due in court on charges related to domestic violence.
Miller first encountered Dowdell and was injured when he exchanged gunfire with the shooter. When Miller took cover, Fayette County prosecutor Richard Bower said, the gunman fired shots injuring the two men and one woman.
Dowdell had been arrested Aug. 25 and charged with aggravated assault, terroristic threats, strangulation, simple assault and harassment. It wasn't clear whether any of the wounded civilians were connected to that domestic violence case.
Miller, who was shot in the hand, is expected to make a full recovery.
Patrick Dowdell
That’s a last name I have never seen.
Patrick, that could be Irish, but Dowdell could be from anywhere.
Sounds like a bad dude for whom violence was a way of life.
Our domestic enemies have been receiving a lot of bad news lately....
“Dowdell had been arrested Aug. 25 and charged with aggravated assault, terroristic threats, strangulation, simple assault and harassment.”
Let’s see.
He assaulted someone with a weapon.
He made a terrorist threat.
He strangled someone
And to to that off, he assaulted someone.
But none of that was enough to keep this thug in jail.
Irish. I've known a few.
Less Dowdell.
More cowbell.
He does look like a wild man.
His wife — more than 20 years younger than he was — was one of the people he killed, along with a police officer who tried to stop him. The third person killed was Dowdell himself.
He doesn't look particularly scary.
“He doesn’t look particularly scary. “
Yeah, the media posts a nice loving picture of him, but not the pictures when he is strangling someone or shooting at cops.
Next the media will be posing pictures of him from middle school.
“Sources believe Dowdell was targeting his wife, not magistrate Judge Dan Shimshock or his staff.”
Oh, in that case, it was just a misunderstanding when he started firing shots in a crowded courthouse.
I bet his bail bondsman is unhappy.
I’m thinking he was probably guilty as charged.
Why? He showed up in court when he was supposed to and didn't jump bail. Bondsman should get his bond back, and he collected his fee up front.
He had been due in court on charges related to domestic violence. ... Guilty.
“He had been due in court on charges related to domestic violence. ... Guilty.”
Shooting up the courthouse does not generally help your case.
This is a heavily armed rural area and shootings are very rare.
Of course this happened in a "gun free zone", i.e., the magistrate's office.
All law abiding citizens were unarmed.
