This Thursday marks what would have been the 100th birthday of Rosemary Kennedy, the eldest daughter of Joseph P. Kennedy and his wife, Rose.
For many years, the story of JFK’s sister, who had an undiagnosed mental disability and was lobotomized at age 23, was shrouded in mystery.

I’d read somewhere that the Soviets did that same thing in their “mental institutes” to political dissidents to basically shut them up.

I know what it is, just didn’t realize it was done back in 1941.
As I said in another reply, I know the Soviets did it to political prisoners in their “mental institutions” - which were basically places they sent anyone who disagreed with communism.

I guess Old Joe didn’t apply the same standards to his sons.
My guess is that she had a mild intellectual disability. It is not uncommon that this kind of disability can cause impulse control problems, including the sexual kind.
FYI, I had an aunt around the same age as Rose Kennedy who also had an intellectual disability. She was kept at home and watched very closely until she died at the age of 26.
When looking at the Kennedy women I noticed that Rosemary looked like the sweeter of the women, like she wasn’t part of their evil. Yes, she was ‘slow,’ for her age. She probably picked up the sexual cues from the open predatory behavior of the men in the family, and being ‘slow,’ the family wasn’t able to train her up on the ‘social skills’ of the day. Doing that to her was the only way to stop her from doing what would come natural to a young beautiful woman. Daddy Kennedy and the boys were truly vile. Mama Kennedy was actually quite evil in her own way; enabling their behavior for her gain in Social Standing. It’s said that the terrible medical act done to Rosemary was done without her approval and apparently was the only open act of anger between her and Daddy Kennedy. Having open affairs would be okay; damaging poor Rosemary for some reason actually hit a cord in Mama Kennedy. Poor child. She really did not look like the other Kennedys. Soft features and an open smile.

From what I’ve read about Mother Rose, she had some deviant behaviors of her own. It is written that she went to a next door neighbor’s swimming pool in Palm Beach (when she had a pool at her own residence) to swim naked. Seems rather voyeuristic. Just proves the old adage that money doesn’t buy class.

One of my favorite movies. Nurse Ratched was the original Hillary.

Actress played the part very well, very believable. One wanted to smack her face whenever she came on screen.
Ironically, Rosemary was the prettiest of the Kennedy
girls.
That was Louise Fletcher and she won Best Actress for that role.
She did a great job.
Nicholson really deviled the Hell out of her.
