ELSEVIERAmsterdam, September 12, 2018A new study* published in the Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports suggests beer brewing practices existed in the Eastern Mediterranean over five millennia before the earliest known evidence, discovered in northern China. In an archaeological collaboration project between Stanford University in the United States, and University of Haifa, Israel, archeologists analyzed three stone mortars from a 13,000-year old Natufian burial cave site in Israel. Their analysis confirmed that these mortars were used for brewing of wheat/barley, as well as for food storage.

Beer predates civilization. There are some anthropologist who suggest that the desire for beer was the motivation for humans to switch from Hunter- gatherers to farming.

People forget beer was a food staple, as it stored over winter well.

At Karahan Tepe there are depressions ground into the bedrock. Some of them appear to be formed into almost a spherical container. I haven’t seen a definitive explanation yet for those so I like to pretend that someone recognized the value of unspillable beer vats.
Beer had another practical use.
Water was usually full of nasty little creatures, although unknown to the ancients what they were, and they would kill you or make you very sick.
Beer solved two problems at once.
During the early 1800’s up until the Civil War, beer was the #1 beverage in the USA, even for breakfast, for that reason.................
