While some men may brag about being better drivers, women are officially superior behind the wheel, a new study has found.
Confused.com research analysing everything from insurance claims to court proceedings for speeding suggests that female drivers are less likely to make a claim and also less likely to commit an offence.
And on average, men have paid £3,327 more for their car insurance over the past decade, the report says.
While the gap has narrowed following an EU gender directive banning insurers from rating on a driver's sex in 2012, there is still a difference - with the current average premium for women standing at £701 a year, with men paying around £793.
Official figures show that 585,000 drivers in England were taken to court last year for motoring offences - with just under 80% of those being men.

I beg to differ based upon what I have seen in my daily commute. Granted, I do live in a college town.
The term “better” is subjective. Women are certainly “better” by the criteria used in the study (though sell phone use is narrowing the gap). Insurance companies make the same claim with their underwriting, making the study superfluous.
If “better” is described as ability to drive under sudden adverse conditions, or skillfully at a high rate of speed, etc. the results might be different.
It is NOT a contradiction that 60% of drivers rate themselves as “above average” drivers. They are choosing their own criteria.
Beware whenever someone invokes a “study.”
Women drivers are scaredy-cats. They are afraid to make decisions and will sit there and defer to the male driver. Many times the woman will chose not to drive such that the husband or boyfriend will take all of the risks.
Easily explained...
There ain’t no men in Europe!!!
I believe Fernando Alonso was actually Felicia Alonso before her/his sex change..
Juan Pablo Montoya was Jean Pablo Montoya before the addadictomie operation.
They are both really crappy drivers, IMHO.
Discuss.
It depends on how you define “better”. Women aren’t as likely to do something stupid because of say, road rage. But they are more likely to do something stupid for no reason at all.
I bet they didn’t study the women driving while talking on cellphones or putting on makeup...................
If they wrote this article 50 yrs ago it would be true in the fundamental sense of the word. Since it is a late article you may bet the farm that it’s utter crap.
I’d have to see the details of the study, but a huge factor in the higher risk exposure for male drivers is that your average man tends to drive far more miles in any given period of time than women. If the data from this study weren’t normalized for this, then the study is worthless.
Ask your wife to back up the trailer and get back to me.
Women are more careful. Men are more skilled but also more aggressive.
You win. I couldn’t back up a trailer for the life of me. Well, I could back it up, but it wouldn’t get very far.
definitely not my wife...i’d prefer driving with Stevie Wonder at times...
The study's conclusion was reached before the study took place. It's a PC study. There was no way any standard would have been used that allowed for any chance that men would be found to be better drivers.
“Men are more skilled but also more aggressive.”
Young men in particular. Eliminate the under 30 year olds and I suspect the results would change.
