9-year-old Denver boy dies by suicide after being bullied at school, mother says

Denver mom says her 9-year-old son died by suicide in their home on Thursday after experiencing bullying in school. She is now sharing the story in hopes of shining a light on bullying and suicide, KDVR reports.

Leia Pierce says bullying was a factor in the death of her son, Jamel Myles, who started fourth grade just last week. Over the summer, Jamel came out to his mother as gay, she said. "(H)e looked so scared when he told me. He was like, 'Mom I'm gay.' And I thought he was playing, so I looked back because I was driving, and he was all curled up, so scared. And I said, I still love you," Pierce told the station.

Jamel wanted to tell his classmates at Joe Shoemaker Elementary School. "He went to school and said he was going tell people he's gay because he's proud of himself," the mother said.

She said when her son came out, he also opened up about wanting to dress more femininely. Pierce said her son told her, "I know you buy me boy stuff because I'm a boy, but I'd rather dress like a girl."

Just four days after starting school last week and coming out to his classmates, Jamel took his own life. Pierce told KDVR that bullying was a factor.

"Four days is all it took at school. I could just imagine what they said to him," Pierce said. "My son told my oldest daughter the kids at school to

There are 6 shelves full of childrens' cooks that actually promote this, even for PK, K, and primary grades, and whole rooms full if you're talking about YA (Young Adult) fiction. Go to Amazon.com or just Google Children's books LGBT and see what comes up. It's sickening.

Incredibly important as a parent to make sure that YOUR KIDS are NOT bullying others.
********************************************

My daughter went through it in 4 grade. I didn’t know for months. She got put in a class that had none of her old friends, but had three girls with their own little click.
She told me one night before bed that she she had no friends, and these girls were really mean to her.
I will say that the teacher and the school handled it well. In fact, they went nuts on these girls. I almost felt sorry for them when they were done with them.
They had them all bawling within minutes. They split them up into different classes, and they had to write apology letters and essays on bullying.
She actually became pretty good friends with one of them by the end of the year.

It makes a big difference in a child’s life if the parents and school stop it before it gets out of hand.

But no 9 year old is capable of determining that he is gay.

I agree. But I remember a boy in my kindergarten class—say 1951—who did act like he was a little girl. He played with the girls and played with dolls. The teacher tried to ease his way with the other kids saying things like, “Fathers have to learn how to take care of babies too.” I don’t recall that he was bullied, per se, but he was pretty much shunned by the boys and he was thought to be odd.

What exactly did this kid's "homosexuality" even mean, and how was it manifested?

I really have a hard time picturing a nine year-old kid hanging out at The Ramrod or Boots & Saddle in New York City's Greenwich Village.

Yup. Apparently Denver police are still investigating this case despite it being ruled a suicide by the coroner.

I feel very strongly there is more to this case.

Hopefully the cops are checking to see if anyone truly did bully him at school and also are looking deeply into the mother. She was already a leftist activist prior to his death, wore pink hair and facial rings, and mentioned on Twitter a few years back she wanted to make a mark in this world. All circumstantial of course but put together can create a profile of an attention seeking leftist looking to get attention by pushing a cause and being a “hero of the resistance”. Also like you said she looks to me to be a serious Munchausen candidate.

I predict this story turns and pretty quickly, assuming the Denver popo do their due filgence. I highly doubt there were kids telling him to kill himself and then he does in 4 days.

“”His ‘discovery’ was the direct result of entertainment media and public school indoctrination.””

I agree with you and the only comment/reply so far that no doubt explains the WHY! Up until your comment, others here seemed to take for granted that this child was never exposed to any outside influence...good grief, there are even TV pharmaceutical commercials today that are about protecting your “gay”ness complete with males kissing...Kids aren’t as dumb as some believe. They are being exposed whether or not they remark on it.

At 9 kids should not even know what sex is, much less what *gay* means.

No way a FOURTH grader is sexually that aware on his own.

Good analysis...Parents may not be mindful if they sit and watch nightly news at home that kids in the room are listening as well..

Mom’s statements:

-Kid told her over the summer he was gay; he looked terrified and was curled up in back seat of car when he told her; Mom says basically don’t worry it’s ok I love you.

-Before first day of school, kid proclaims to mom he is going to tell all the kids at school he is gay as he is so happy and proud of it (despite previously being terrified to even tell his mom).

-Mom makes no mention of checking in on how it went the first 4 days of school; rather she says after his death that she found out from his sister that he was being bullied and the kids told him specifically to kill himself, which he then supposedly did. Mom is now inspired to be a antibullying and pro gay kid advocate.

Her story is very convenient setting up his death but absolving herself of any knowledge of the buildup in fact distancing herself from it. And she finds the body unresponsive and “tried unsuccessfully to revive him”.

I will also add that mom said “I wish he came to me” during the 4 days of school bullying and death threats. Yet he didn’t despite her claiming that initially she was the first one he came out to and was terrified to tell anyone else.

The “I wish he came to me” is a tell. She puts this in her statements to absolve herself of any involvement/guilt.

He supposedly excitedly shared with her that when school started he was going to tell everyone he was gay, but then for 4 days she never followed up with him and had no clue what was happening.

Bullshit.

Yes. I think this is very sad, no matter what the real story.

But I look askance at hootenannies with lip and nose rings along with flourescent hair who have no husband yet have a kid. With an “ethnic” name no less, and a slightly ethnic look.

Tells me at the very least this is a very unstable home. And perhaps to check in with her regardless (or the sister).

"I highly doubt there were kids telling him to kill himself and then he does in 4 days."

Maybe I didn't pick this up from the story, but I'm assuming that school *just* started.

The kid told his mother he's gay and wants to wear girls clothes "this summer".

It's still summer, so probably not that long ago.

I'm such a cynic, and coupled with the picture, released by mom herself, showing her to be a liberal activist, I'm immediately suspicious.

And the mom had no idea of the bullying he was getting the first 4 days, despite being fully aware he was going to come out loud and proud on Day 1. Only after he died she found out “from his sister” that he was told to kill himself. So mom never checked on him during those 4 days AND the sister didn’t quickly relay to mom he was suicidal while he was alive?? Bull.
