COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -
A Columbus man has to have his arms amputated after being attacked by three pit bulls.
Forty-two-year-old Dudley Willis says he was walking home from the store last week when he was mauled by three pit bulls belonging to one the neighbors on the corner of 38th Street and Earline Avenue.
“He was left laying here in this area, just left laying out here. Nobody called for help or nothing. He was just left laying out here,” says his sister Alycia Willis.
Alycia Willis says he was left there for an hour and twenty-five minutes before being taken to Piedmont Columbus Regional Hospital.
“The hospital called us after he had a seven-hour surgery. He has been through six surgeries since Sunday,” says Alycia Willis.
She received another one of those phone calls during the interview with News Leader 9. The doctors told her that both of her brother’s arms will have to be amputated.
“It kind of scares me,” says neighbor Carson Layfield.
Neighbors say the dogs have been a common problem for close to a year now. Some of the kids in the neighborhood say they can’t even walk to their bus stop without fear.
“The dogs chased them up the street and they’re only 10 and 8 years old. They’re scared to death,” says area resident Josh Drysdale.
The family says animal control has taken the dogs and the owner has been arrested. Neighbors say there are other dogs belonging to that same owner that they say are just as dangerous.
“It’s been an ongoing situation. They chased my daughter. She is six years old. If that would have been her, if that would’ve been a child that’s going through what my brother is going through, they would not have survived,” says Alycia Willis.
The family of the victim says they will be taking legal action against the owner of the dogs. They say for now they’re just wishing their loved one a speedy recovery.

Vaquero, Are you trying to say that pit-bulls are just as wonderful as any other breed of dogs?
I am sorry that you have both lost limbs. The two of you would of course understand, at least partially, the enormity of this man’s loss more than most.
This is actually an enormous part of the problem of pit bull dogs.
When a victim is killed, the medical bills stop, and the caretaking bills stop, and there is an end. This I can not put politely. The financial drain stops.
When the victim lives, the bills go on and the pain in this world goes on, and the surgeries, and the healing, and the disablement, and the caretaking . . .
And almost always, the enabler, the dog’s owner, gets off scot-free, or with a ticket and a small fine.
Who is paying for this? Follow the money.
I am willing to bet these dogs were never properly trained as you would any other breed. people who leave their dogs in situations that makes them aggressive desire it as they want to scare off potential threats. I am seriously sorry for what happened to this man, and I pray for his recovery as much as is possible based on his injuries.

I could stay and fence with you about this crusade you are on and there are thousands of others who would flush this thread like a toilet with opposing views. There are bad dogs to be sure, but not across the board as a breed as you constantly posit. Even Police Departments are using Pit Bulls as service dogs, but you insist that your mission is to kill them all

Good for you, so can I get you to come to Albuquerque and adopted the 200 to 250 pit and pit mixes to keep them out of the hands on well meaning amateurs and felonious criminals? Q: Why do people say, “Pit bulls are dog-aggressive not human-aggressive?”
Due to selective breeding for the purposes of dogfighting, pit bulls are highly dog-aggressive. This aggression is not limited to dogs; pit bulls frequently kill other companion pets and domesticated animals. Leading pit bull education websites warn pit bull owners to, “Never trust your pit bull not to fight.” These same websites also state that pit bulls should never be left alone with another dog or animal.20 The practical and moral question is: Why is “pit bull dog aggression” tolerated at all?
Pit bull dog aggression is unacceptable for two reasons. In many instances it leads to human aggression. A common scenario is the following: A loose pit bull attacks a leashed dog being walked by its owner. The owner gets seriously injured trying to stop the attack. Every year, one or more Americans suffers death due to pit bull dog aggression, including pit bull rescuers like Rita Woodard and Mary Jo Hunt who died while attempting to break up a fight between their pit bulls.
Secondly, far too many beloved companion pets and domesticated animals suffer a violent death by the powerful jaws of pit bull terriers each year. In some instances, these attacks involve pit bulls charging through screen doors of private homes — in a home invasion attack — to kill the pet living inside.21 Owners of the pet are then forced to watch as their dog or cat is disemboweled by the pit bull and pray that the animal does not turn its attention on an innocent family member next.
