More Strikeouts Than Hits? Welcome to Baseball’s Latest Crisis
NY Times ^ | August 16, 2018 | Tyler Kepner

One thing you learn from studying baseball history is that people have always predicted the sport’s demise. Over and over, the game weathers every perceived crisis and continues to thrive. More than 70 million fans will attend major league games this season; another 40 million or so will go to minor league games. Countless more watch the sport on television and online.

And yet attendance is down, and more and more balls are being kept out of play. Some longtime observers consider the shifting landscape — hitters swinging for the fences, pitchers throwing everything with maximum effort, fielders standing in unusual spots — and wonder what has happened to their game.

Earl Weaver baseball has taken over the game; swing for the fences. The only way to stop this trend is to move the fences back and/or increase the height of the outfield walls.

Change the strike zone from the beltline to the elbows. No more pitcher’s duels.

“I stopped watching Baseball in the 80’s during one of those Strikes”

Your loss.

I had a better outcome.

I cancelled cable during a strike and have never ever re subscribed.

Best thing ever.

“Relax, all right? Don’t try to strike everybody out. Strikeouts are boring! Besides that, they’re fascist. Throw some ground balls – it’s more democratic.”-Crash Davis

Mygosh, could it be that attendance is down because of political correctness? In Cleveland (in spite of denying rumors before it happened), the Indians sold out on using Chief Wahoo and the name "Indians" on their new logos. In exchange, they get next year's All Star Game.

No mention that the Indians were named in honor of Louis Sockalexis, the first Native American to play professional baseball. Wahoo (the logo) maybe should've been toned down to be less of a caricature and more of a likeness of Sockalexis, but selling out on their history and traditions for one game that doesn't even matter? Erasing this historic occurrence and recognition from history? And wondering why attendance is down? You can't fix stupid.

JMHO

Why’d they fire Dusty Baker?

I’ve been thinking that’s had a lot to do with it.

They also miss Jayson Werth’s leadership.

Yep

Daryl Strawberry hitting a 500+ foot homer off the clock tower, or Reggie hitting it out of Tiger Stadium or Dave Kingman hitting 3 houses down Weyland ave exciting!!!

Watching a 6-5 game where the only scoring is an exchange of cheap 340 foot solo home runs. Boooorrring.

Dwight Gooden, Nolan Ryan, Randy Johnson striking out 15 every 5 days. Fun

Mike Pelfry and 5 scrub relievers striking out 15 every night, not fun

Why’d they fire Dusty Baker?

Because no one can take a winner and have them lose like Dusty can.

“Move the pitching mound back 5 feet.”

That’ll happen right after they raise the heights of the baskets in the NBA.

The game needs more offense to build a long-term audience.

Remember back in 1968 when only one player hit over .300

Hit .301

Players who hit home runs get paid, even if strike out half the time

GM should pay players for average vs swinging for the fences

As for the shift, learn to bunt or hit the ball into the
empty section of the infield
