Motorists may be taxed on distance driven rather than paying excise on fuel [Ireland]
Irish Times ^ | 08/06/2018 | Fiach Kelly, Deputy Political Editor

Motorists may be taxed on the distance they drive rather than paying excise on fuel at petrol station pumps, under plans proposed by senior officials.

The Government is considering numerous schemes to ensure the overall tax take from motoring does not drop significantly as a result of moves to lower emission vehicles.

The Department of Finance has outlined a series of options on how to ensure the exchequer does not lose out, such as a fixed charge on the purchase of every car, no matter how low its emissions levels are.

Recent policy has been designed to encourage motorists to purchase lower emission vehicles, which are subject to lower vehicle registration taxes (VRT) and annual motor tax.

However, officials now warn that although lower emissions will still be incentivized, the move towards such vehicles, particular electric-powered cars, will “severely challenge the revenue” accrued by the exchequer through VRT, excise and motor tax. […]

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has already indicated that carbon taxes will rise in the October budget, saying the State will have to “grasp the nettle” to reach its climate-change commitments. …

Meant to mention that California was thinking about doing the same thing four years ago.

Then what's the point of fuel efficient cars?

Yep, this idea will come to America, California in particular, sooner or later.

I worry that we will pay two taxes, the existing gas tax plus this mileage tax.

It is like getting people to quit smoking and then complaining you wont get the cigarette taxes anymore (which is EXACTLY what happened in California).

So then , have they found a downside to electric cars? And that downside is they don’t pay gas taxes?

But the electric cars are using a heck of a lot more electricity to recharge. Is electricity taxed?

Motorists may be taxed on the distance they drive rather than as well as paying excise on fuel at petrol station pumps, under plans proposed by senior officials. FIXED

QUIZ FOR THE DAY: Name any tax that has been completely abolished.

Hmmm??? This is already happening... the tax on gasoline is the biggest part of its price. The more gas your burn, the more taxes you pay.

We KNOW with Leftists, their promises are LIES. They will impose the tax on distance and also KEEP (and raise) the tax on gas... no matter their promises that this a “replacement” for taxes on gasoline.

If Leftists didn’t LIE they’d DIE!

LOL. So for all you do-gooder liberal environmentalists who bought expensive electric cars, it doesn’t matter. You’re going to be taxed just as much as the redneck with a 20 year old pick up truck.

This was inevitable. The Welfare State needs tax money. The goal isn’t to make you more fuel efficient. The goal is to control you and take your money. If you drive a car I’ll tax the street . . . . .

Of course, GPS will be employed, which will invade privacy like nothing else.

In fact, tax based on mileage may happen, but only for electric cars. It’ll probably be around 15 to 20 cents per mile.

Actually makes a little bit of sense. These taxes are supposed to fund road repairs (i know they aren’t, but i’m playing devils advocate). So the more miles you drive, the more you impact roads. Also kills the incentive to buy Tesla’s and Prius’s. More F-150’s in Ireland!!

In the U.S., you will continue to pay the excise tax on gasoline and diesel...and pay the VMT tax also.

If you love doing your taxes, you will love doing the paperwork to pay your Vehicles Mile Traveled tax.

I believe a Ford Focus specd like the typical one sold in the USA for around $20k would sell for $40k+ in Ireland. An F150 would be astronomical.

Road wear is largely dependent on vehicle weight. Semis do 100x more road damage than cars. Ice can also wreck havoc on roads. Taxes ought to be proportional to road damage.

I decided to check my 100x figure, which seemed high. I’m sorry to say I was WAY off. “A study by the U.S. General Accounting Office (GAO) determined that the road damage caused by a single 18-wheeler was equivalent to the damage caused by 9,600 cars.” The article went on to say, the actual damage may be 160,000x!
