Then what's the point of fuel efficient cars?

Road wear is largely dependent on vehicle weight. Semis do 100x more road damage than cars. Ice can also wreck havoc on roads. Taxes ought to be proportional to road damage.

I decided to check my 100x figure, which seemed high. I’m sorry to say I was WAY off. “A study by the U.S. General Accounting Office (GAO) determined that the road damage caused by a single 18-wheeler was equivalent to the damage caused by 9,600 cars.” The article went on to say, the actual damage may be 160,000x!
