The Cessna 414 declared an emergency and went down at a mall parking lot near John Wayne Airport at 12:28 p.m., the Federal Aviation Administration said.
The twin-engine aircraft crashed near South Coast Plaza in the 3900 block of Bristol Street, said Tony Bommarito, a spokesman for Orange County Fire Authority.
The incident happened in the parking lot of a Staples store, spokesman Stephen Consiglio told the Los Angeles Times. The plane hit a vehicle but nobody in the car was hurt, Consiglio added.
The crash did not ignite a fire.
The aircraft was heading to John Wayne Airport, but it was unclear where it was coming from, airport spokeswoman Deanne Thompson said.

I used to take my lunch hour to shop at Staples, Vitamin Shoppe, and CVS. It would be unusual for an aircraft to fly into JWA in that direction.
Im guessing fuel exhaustion. No fire. They were on approach after a 1000 mile flight. Relatively heavy load.
Aircraft was actively for sale and engines both had 1170 hours on a 1600 hour TBO.
Very sad.
Yes, it does sound like fuel exhaustion. I’m sure the ATC tapes will show more, as the pilot most likely radioed he was low on fuel, and maybe even requested an emergency response at the airport. Very sad, indeed.
Wow, running out of fuel...how awful. Why in the world wouldn’t a pilot stop a couple hundred miles sooner to top off? The stakes are so high.
Maybe a mile from where I work.
Yes. Pilot did call for a Mayday but I havent heard the call.
Gotta play it by the book.
Pilots are supposed to do fuel calculations for every trip along with weight and balance.
A lot of pilots get lazy and dont do it. Or they could make a simple math mistake.
At the airport my son and I fly out of, I69, a guy rented a Cessna 172 from Sportys Pilot Shop the other day. Loaded it with fuel and three buddies.
Never made it off the runway. Ran it off into a ditch at the end. He was 500 lbs overweight from the 980 max load. Just stupid. At least no one died in that one.
Dont fill the tanks if you fill the seats.
RIP All
KFI reported that the pilot declared an emergency ... I agree with the rest of you, it was likely a fuel issue.
Flightaware says it was 428 miles.

It’s interesting that a 757 was right in front of him. They are notorious for their wake turbulence.
It landed at 12:28

Years ago a plane with five people crashed in Newport Beach on a tennis court coming in for a landing at SNA killing all.
That was the one that Rich Snyder (president of In N Out) was on.
I knew a fairly new pilot who ran out of gas and ended up in a lake. Fortunately he survived. When I penciled out the numbers afterwards, it was pretty clear that his error was that he didn’t calculate in a very strong headwind. If the air had been calm, he would have had plenty of fuel.
That one in Newport Beach tennis court?
I read on Facebook that the flight originated in Concord CA. Buchanan Field. I don’t know how reliable the info is...

Ahh, my bad...I was wrong on which crash. Snyders plane crashed in a field (link above).
Yeah, but you fly into 22L as GA at SNA.
