It is the secretive fraternity that has championed their male-only membership for centuries.
But the Freemasons have decided to break from tradition by allowing women to join the brotherhood, but only if they were born male.
In new guidance the United Grand Lodge of England, which was founded in 1717, has said transgender women - or men who have undergone gender reassignment surgery - may still join the Masonic Lodges.
The dress code has also been slightly redefined allowing women who were born men to wear a smart dark skirt and top.
The Freemasons have told their 200,000 members that a Freemason who after initiation ceases to be a man does not cease to be a Freemason.
The organization's gender reassignment guidance - which was issued to the brotherhood on July 17 - also said that a woman who had become a man may become a member. Women who have not undergone reassignment surgery will still be exempt from Freemason membership, however.

Then whats a the hubbub, Bub?”
Don’t know.
I think it’s pretty clever, actually. Rejecting transgenderism as nonsense and yet appearing open.
Very British way of telling someone to sod off.
The order of the Eastern star is for women.
Neither organization is for committed Christians...
Builders, eh?
The Stonecutters had a few higher standards.
I agree.
I have no idea what you are talking about. I am not a freemason.
What is the quote from?
The extent I know about them is some freemasons in France help my maternal grandfather (and a number of other Jewish people) escape occupied France by forging documents for him.
They were subsequently sent to a “labor” camp, as they, too, ended up on Hitler’s naughty list.
Ergo, they seem OK to me.
He does not “cease to be a man”; he becomes a mutilated, chemically altered man.
“Freemasons are supposed to believe in God.”

A requirement to apply is a belief in a Supreme Being and being of sound mind. The grand lodges of the several states and countries around the world share the Grand Lodge of England as a source of their charters, and thereby, recognize each other. Now that England is compromised by Muslims, the determination of soundness of mind will likely vary among the world’s Masonic jurisdictions. I would not expect the grand lodges of Eastern Europe to accept applications from Muslims in recognition of the past conflicts the Muslims have had with those Christian countries, and the recent attacks in Turkey against Freemasons (1999, 2004).
Boy, mixed feelings on this one but, I’m inclined to say “Nope”.
Grand Lodge of California would probably say “Yes”....and destroy a few lodges in the process...
Yes, because their are oaths, rites and rituals which are particular to men, just as there are the same for women who would be in Eastern Star.
“The organization’s gender reassignment guidance - which was issued to the brotherhood on July 17 - also said that a woman who had become a man may become a member. Women who have not undergone reassignment surgery will still be exempt from Freemason membership, however.”
They are letting women who get cut up to more resemble men join.
