RAPIDES PARISH, La. - An Arrest is made in a dog fighting operation.

Rapides Parish Sheirff's office says they have arrested Sherman Lane Nash Jr., 38, of Pineville. He is charged with seven counts of Aggravated Cruelty to Animals and three counts dog fighting/possession of fighting dogs.

Investigators were received a tip of animal cruelty and possible dog fighting in the Wardville community of Pineville. Sheriff’s Detectives had been conducting surveillance in the area and through information gathered, were able to establish sufficient probable cause to secure a search warrant for the property that the alleged abuse was taking place. Detectives discovered 17 Pit Bull dogs in the wooded area, all chained. Several of the dogs had no water, food, or shelter and most of the dogs had injuries and scars that were consistent with injuries sustained from dog fighting or abuse. Detectives recovered several pieces of dog fight training equipment and a “breeding stand” used for the forced breeding of dogs on the property. All of the dogs, which varied in ages from a few months to several years, were collected and taken to the Alexandria Animal Shelter.

Sheriff’s detectives say their investigation is still ongoing more arrest are pending in this investigation.

The same training was necessary for the Great Danes with which I shared an office for several years. One had a habit of drinking out of the faucet in the break area, while standing four-footed on the floor. The broker/breeder preferred to let him drink out of the sink as he swallowed less air while drinking, as the breed is prone to bloat.

You live in a constant state of fear and denial.

Seriously; that is no way to live.

That’s the one GMA was showing. I think I’d take my chances with an unknown pit over George Snuffanoctopus and Robin Roberts.

There are no bad African Americans. Only racist laws that they had no say in passing.

It’s truly a shame we are barraged here on FR with all this fear and hate mongering paranoia by one or two people with an ax to grind against dogs. It’s pure propaganda with an agenda to promote fear and loathing much the same way certain news media does the same thing against President Trump.

In a perfect world they would be admitted to an insane asylum to get the treatment they need or to spend the rest of their paranoid life.

This is the weakness of the Internet. Any loon can come here or elsewhere on the web and spout whatever they like. Most times there will be lemmings ready and waiting to follow them off the cliff of insanity. CNN is a perfect example of such lunacy. These Anti-Dog threads are FR’s version of CNN.

If there were a couple of these a year; no one would pay any attention to these loons but they are daily or at least several times a week. If I had a say in the matter they would be deleted as fast as humanly possible.

“These cruel low-life dregs of humanity choose Pit Bulls because they are so malleable and trainable to fight.”

Why do you think they are so malleable and trainable to fight, as opposed to beagles or labs or whatever? I mean if the goal is to fight dogs, you pick a breed that has been bred for the purpose. The scum are smart enough to use the right tool for the job.

Good job on training your big dogs. It makes for happy dogs and happy people around the dogs. Supposedly only 5% of dog owners deign to train their dogs, which is mind blowing when you consider the money spent on pet dogs.

Like I said; because their main goal is to please their humana. To get praise and acceptance.

As far as I’m concerned; all those involved in dog fighting should receive the death penalty. Nothing less is punishment enough. They have already proven they are not fit to live. I feel the same way about poachers; especially in Africa and other places. I can kinda understand some back country or mountain dwelling people who live in seclusion killing the occasional deer or elk to survive but not those who kill elephants and rhinos for their tusks and horns. Those poachers deserve to be killed on the spot and left for the carrions and other wild animals to feed on.

The people who post these anti-dog threads really need to be ridiculed and stigmatized. Exactly what they are doing to certain breeds of dogs.

Everyone should read this one single web page to be educated on how Pitties came to be and why they are so revered and were considered America's Dog for so long until one stupid article vilified them. Pay no attention to the nut jobs who post these hateful fear-mongering Pit Bull threads. They live in state of fear and paranoia. Don't let them infect you too.

How America’s Dog Became Public Enemy #1 – And Why They’re Making Such A Comeback

Yes, some evil people have abused some dogs and caused them to hurt others, including other dogs but that is a tiny fraction of the number of good dogs of the same breeds who were not abused. Be smart. Know the difference. Don't listen to these nutters who post these hateful threads.

By the way, just in case you might be wondering why I take the time to stick up for those who have no voice (the Pit Bulls themselves), it’s for the same reason many speak up for the unborn about abortions.

These dog bashing threads serve no good purpose at all. Now if someone were to post an article about dogs that didn’t bash them; it would be a basis for a fun and interesting story-telling conversation.

These threads are trash though. Good for one thing; the delete button.

Well, if I absolutely had to choose, I would prefer to be around trained pits as opposed to untrained pits. I would like to know the split of unprovoked dog attacks from trained dogs as opposed to untrained, not just pits but all dogs. I would like to see if trained or untrained pits attack more, and how serious the attack is, compared to other dogs. I think it seems to be reasonable to require training for dog breeds trained to fight and attack.

Also, I think there is a certainty that breeding affects a dog’s behavior. For instance, I wouldn’t like to be suddenly shrunk down to mouse-size in front of the most well-trained Jack Russel terrier. I don’t know if that would apply to large dogs bred to fight or attack large animals, but it is certainly within the realm of plausibility.

I don’t know if what some have alleged about the ‘snapping and mauling’ that pits supposedly do is true, or if it only happens with untrained animals, or if this has happened with well trained animals. The most I have seen is that the owner usually says something like the dog has never done this before, it was so sweet. I haven’t heard an owner of one of these dogs that suddenly attacks say the dog was trained at all.

I agree some training is important but far more important is for the dog to feel like part of the family and treated with respect and affection. A neglected dog is also abused dog. I have a rescue terrier like that. With time, affection, respect, and the freedom to just be herself she blossomed into a really good family dog I’d trust with even the smallest of children.

You may be mixing up training with discipline although the two generally go hand in hand.

You can have a disciplined dog who listens to you when you give him/her basic commands like ‘stay’, ‘get in the yard’, or to come when you call to them. That’s a bit different than, say, teaching them to do dog tricks like ‘sit’, ‘lay down’, or ‘fetch’. Then you have the working breeds who crave working and need the guidance to know what to do like when Border Collies herd sheep.

There are certain breeds of dogs I simply don’t feel comfortable leaving alone with small children simply because kids can and will do the dumbest things like pulling on a dogs ears or tail or hair not knowing the dog hates that.

I’ve seen my Pit get into a fight with another of my dogs without hurting the other dog at all but she gets some cuts on her face. She is teaching the other dog boundaries the only way she knows how. You know what? It works. The other dog doesn’t make the mistake of getting too close to the Pit’s food again or whatever the basic lesson is all about. Sometimes it’s about establishing a pecking order. Pack members need to know their position in the pack with the human as the leader.

In human terms this would be considered a spat between siblings but because dogs sound like they tearing each other apart when they do that (even though they aren’t); people mistake it for something it isn’t. Unfortunately if a dog, especially a medium to large strong dog, does this to a soft human; the damage to the human will likely be worse.

I have no children living at home and if I anticipated any; I would not have gotten certain breeds. People need to do their homework to decide on what breeds they should allow in their homes under the conditions they have. We humans are supposed to be the smart ones but sometimes I really wonder about that being true.

Pretty sure that's the point. The men are big wussies afraid a friendly dog just because they listened to some hateful fear-mongering propaganda about Pitties.

I would suggest that very, very few % of trained dogs are then neglected or abused. Someone taking the time to actually train their dog is probably planning to then include the happy dog in their life, which in turn makes the owner happy. Supposedly only around 5% of dog owners bother to train, even the barest minimum ‘come sit stay no’.

Again, it would be interesting to know what % of unprovoked dog attacks happen with trained vs untrained animals, and how pits compare to all dogs.

It’s a variety show featuring a midget, a gap-toothed gorilla, and a giraffe-faced lesbian. Good for an occasional laugh.
