Mom blames Hot Cheetos, other spicy snacks for teen's health issues

Rene Craighead, 17, of Memphis, Tennessee, estimated she was eating about four bags of the popular hot chip flavors when she began feeling sick to her stomach, reports CBS affiliate WREG-TV. She was taken to the hospital and underwent surgery to remove her gallbladder. Her mother, also named Rene, thinks the spicy snacks had something to do with her health problems.

"She loves them. Every time I go out she says, 'Bring me back some Hot Takis, bring me back some Hot Chips.' I want to make her her happy, so I brought them back. She was eating big bags and would take them to school with her," the mom told WREG-TV.

However, medical experts say gallbladder problems are not caused by eating specific foods. The National Institutes of Health explains, "Being overweight or having obesity may make you more likely to develop gallstones, especially if you are a woman. Researchers have found that people who have obesity may have higher levels of cholesterol in their bile, which can cause gallstones. ... Some studies have shown that people who carry large amounts of fat around their waist may be more likely to develop gallstones."

Dr. Cary Canvender, a gastroenterologist at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital, told WREG-TV..."We do see tons of gastritis and ulcer-related stuff due to it. We probably see around 100 kids a month, easily."

Probably metabolism. My son was a bottomless pit at that age and was really thin.

I doubt she has tape worms. My son was the same way. Thin as a rail at that age and ate a lot.

Who is paying for all those bags of chips? SNAP? EBT?

Mom’s an idiot. It’s the carb % of daughter’s diet that is killing her.

❤️❤️❤️ I love you. Had to check to make sure I didn’t write your post. But it was too well written.

MSG hides his neurotoxic self legally under so many words on the ingredient list. Among others, it can be inside the words ‘flavoring,’ ‘natural flavors,’ ‘spice,’ ‘yeast extract,’ etc.

To find chips without msg, you need to stay away from all flavored chips except some of the sour flavors like salt and vinegar or limon. 99.9% of canned or pouched or boxed soups in supermarkets have it. Most chips and crackers contain it.

And like logi said, avoid the chips made with rancid seed oils like canola. Look for avocado or coconut oils.

A few of our sons have issues with MSG such that we hide things like Ramen noodle packages from them. I’m not a big Ramen fan. But some of our children love them and occasionally talk their father into buying them. I am never told of their existence because they are immediately hidden to prohibit certain sons from having them. I seldom allow Takis or other MSG laden chips/snacks into the house.

The other day, our son was at a neighbor’s house. The neighbors were eating lunch at some point, and they asked our son if he wanted some Ramen noodles. He hesitated. They thought he was being polite. The mom assured him that it was ok and that he could have them. He ate them. She texted me at about the time he was done eating. She described his hesitation and thought he was just cute and sweet. Ahhhhhh! I explained his Ramen issues. She did not get to see the Jekyl and Hyde transformation the following day. But we did. He was a fidgety nut, pest, instigator, almost victim of violence from older siblings. We reminded him of why he isn’t allowed Ramen or certain chips or other garbage foods.

One of our older sons was equally bad with MSG. He is at the point in life in which he wants to eat foods that are good for him rather than a bunch of junk. And he isn’t at home any more, so yay! :-)

Eating 4 big bags of those things will cause anybody to have issues. They will know what “fire in the hole” really means!

You can buy plain ramen noodles, and boil them and put them in homemade broth - freeze chicken bone broth in solo cups. Or you can Asian it up with miso broth, or quick homemade dashi broth with fish flakes and seaweed.

Yes. That sounds like work. hahaha. But I think we can probably boil up some chickens and make our own broth. Even the canned broth has MSG in it. :(

Our second son used to eat the Ramen flavor packets. (probably ate the package, too. haha) That is when we started noticing his volatile, emotional behavior. Then we paid attention to all the things he was eating.

They need to check her thyroid while they are at it. A faulty thyroid craves red food dye and hot pepper.

If the problem was ulcers, yes hot food. Gallbladder, not so much.

It’s really easy to make chicken bone broth. Roast an organic chicken and have a great meal. Take the carcass and bones and throw them into a crockpot with good water (not tap water usually) and a couple splashes of apple cider vinegar, leave it for 12-24 hrs, then add vegetables and cook another 12-24 hrs. Strain into big bowl and cool to room temp, then ladle into solo cups and freeze. Cut the cup and warm, when ready for the broth, adding your salt and whatever spices you want.

I have a son who also loves msg. And he reacts to it too, but still won’t give up his chex mix etc.
