Mom blames Hot Cheetos, other spicy snacks for teen's health issues

Rene Craighead, 17, of Memphis, Tennessee, estimated she was eating about four bags of the popular hot chip flavors when she began feeling sick to her stomach, reports CBS affiliate WREG-TV. She was taken to the hospital and underwent surgery to remove her gallbladder. Her mother, also named Rene, thinks the spicy snacks had something to do with her health problems.

"She loves them. Every time I go out she says, 'Bring me back some Hot Takis, bring me back some Hot Chips.' I want to make her her happy, so I brought them back. She was eating big bags and would take them to school with her," the mom told WREG-TV.

However, medical experts say gallbladder problems are not caused by eating specific foods. The National Institutes of Health explains, "Being overweight or having obesity may make you more likely to develop gallstones, especially if you are a woman. Researchers have found that people who have obesity may have higher levels of cholesterol in their bile, which can cause gallstones. ... Some studies have shown that people who carry large amounts of fat around their waist may be more likely to develop gallstones."

Dr. Cary Canvender, a gastroenterologist at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital, told WREG-TV..."We do see tons of gastritis and ulcer-related stuff due to it. We probably see around 100 kids a month, easily."

...Dr. Cary Canvender, a gastroenterologist at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, says there’s a lot of factors that go into having a gallbladder removed. But he believes eating the chips probably contributed.

The doctor says the number of children they see with stomach problems due to the chips is staggering.

“We probably see around 100 kids a month, easily.”

I know that this is Trump’s fault, he’s separating a hot Cheeto from its family member.

She needs ICE to put out the heat...

And let’s blame the Cheetos instead of the person buying them.

I was expecting to see an over 200 lb mom and a daughter on her way to her mom’s size. But both were a normal healthy size. While the mother should never have allowed her daughter to eat so much crap in the first place, I applaud her for sounding an alarm on this issue.

"We assure you that Takis are safe to eat, but should be enjoyed in moderation as part of a well-balanced diet."

I know they have to say that, but a rebuttal always comes to mind immediately: Ok, which "part" of that well-balanced diet are they? It's like the Saturday cartoon commercials that show you that Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs are "part of a good breakfast", that already-good breakfast being scrambled eggs, a cup of orange juice, buttered toast, and a glass of milk.

Her mother, also named Rene, thinks the spicy snacks had something to do with her health problems.

No Rene, it was all the fats in the Cheetos that affected the gall bladder. Spicy might have had an effect too but geez Louise...just tell the kid to cut back to a handful or two will ya. Bimbo.

Whatever you do, people, don't fat shame this useless eater.

Those damn chips. Somebody should sue the chip company.

I know two people who had their gall bladder removed. They both said that they thought something was wrong when eating anything with a high fat content

After a great many attacks, my gall bladder was removed, and I'm pretty sure it was the pint of ice cream I ate after every dinner. :(

Dollar bags, per the video. I’d bet two ounces or so per bag. Bad but not Jabba The Hut bad.

Or in my case, perhaps the delicious Italian Salami
