Israel takes down Syrian plane
For the second day in a row, sirens sound in Israel's north. Israel fires interceptor missiles towards Syrian plane in Israeli airspace. Sirens sounded Tuesday afternoon in regional councils in the Golan Heights and the Jordan Valley, as well as in the northern city of Katzrin.
Residents of northern Israel reported that two interceptor missiles were fired from the Tzfat region.
The IDF confirmed that two Patriot missiles had been fired at a Syrian Sukhoi plane. The plane was being tracked, and when it reached two kilometers (1.24 miles) into Israel, it was shot down.
Later reports said the plane fell in Syrian territory. The fate of the Syrian pilots is not clear.

Nice targeting.
Does anyone know what Syria is flying?
Old MIGs? Old USA Milcraft?
Has the Patriot been used against fixed wing aircraft before?
Nah...just some gooner out doing loopdy loops!
Good shoot’n Tex...
Shooting down an airplane with a Patriot missile is worlds of overkill but satisfyingly effective! Those are made to take out much smaller targets flying much faster.
Reminds me of early training on the M-1 tanks where they installed cameras into the sight block so evaluators could see exactly what the gunner was aiming at. After our range run, the gunner is pretty bored inside with nothing to shoot at, so I was “Locked on and tracking” Huey that was traversing the area with the tanks sights for close to 30 seconds. A one star general in the debriefing tent saw our filmed run and asked me if I though I could shoot a helicopter out of the air with the main gun.
There were big smiles all around.
Identified as a Sukhoi, so almost certainly a Su-22 or Su-24.
Funny story.
Funny that is until a Cobra climbs on your distracted six and lights you up with a TOW. :)
Thanks — I missed the craft in the article (my bad scan mode I guess).
During GWI, a battery took out a friendly (UK) aircraft one night. The a/c’s IFF had a problem, irrc.
I a friendly fire incident, a British Tornado fighter jet was hit with a Patriot on Sunday, March 23, 2003; the incident happened near the border between Iraq and Kuwait.
Suhoi 22 or 24...Mig 29
At the cruising speed of an SU24, how long would it take to go 1.24 miles into Israeli airspace? What kind of stuff would the Syrian pilot be trying to evade that he would risk violating Israel’s airspace? Seems like Assad is coming out on top in Syria but I doubt he can afford to waste planes and pilots needling the Israelis...In short, what the hell are the Syrians thinking?
The tanker was good in that he shot and moved in the mixed terrain so that the helo crew had a very hard time spotting it.
One airman finally saw a muzzle flash, and they were able to kill the tank just before the fuel gauge required disengagement.
Could be pilot erred for 3 seconds and by that time the missile was on it’s way...
Thinking?
