Francesco Molinari won the British Open on Sunday, giving him his first major title after emerging from a crowded pack including Tiger Woods in a wild final round at Carnoustie.
Molinari shot a bogey-free, 2-under 69 to finish on 8-under 276. He became the first Italian to capture a major championship.
Earlier, Tiger Woods played himself into contention, edging to within a stroke of the lead on the front nine.
Woods led briefly, but dropped out of the lead after a double-bogey at the 11th hole.
He sent his second shot into the gallery, with the ball rebounding out into the rough. He duffed his chip, then three-putted from off the green.

You have to also consider Byron Nelson...Byron Nelson wins 18 tournaments in a calendar year to set an all-time PGA Tour record-including a record 11 in a row and a record 19 consecutive rounds under 70.
So what golfer before him ever did that consistent nba-fist pump crap? That’s part of what brings in that audience and encourages that sort of screaming ****. Golf isn’t FB BB or MLB, nor should it be. Isn’t it nice to see gentlemanly behavior for a change?
Sure he brings in ratings. But so does crap on “reality TV” The obsession, much of it due to racial pandering, was 24/7.
And he also soiled the sport with his off the field antics.
BN was a very good golfer and had that one great season that will probably never be duplicated.
That said...
Jack’s 18 majors wins + 19 second place finishes in majors is clearly the greatest career of all time.
And he’s a MUCH better human being than elrod...
You beat me to it...Tied for 6th is NOT just short...
...
Considering that he held the lead in the middle of his round, I’d say the title is appropriate.
Oh, I agree that Nicklaus was probably the greatest...I was just making a point that there are several others that have to fall into consideration...
If he had held the lead or was tied after 17 and then lost on the 18th, then I would agree he fell “just short”...
But in this tournament he fell “just short” of five other golfers...
Here’s my top 5 list: (1) Woods (2) Nicklaus (3) Snead (4) Palmer (5) Hogan.
My top pick.
Nicklaus - Six green jackets.
He can’t putt. Astounding someone as good as he is, has been so bad this year. He needs a coach to get him straight on his putting.
I know that's going to be an awful damn long list, make sure you include past winners that used, so I'll understand if it takes you awhile.
I am still amazed at the hate for Woods from some people, you would think they had been married to Woods and he cheated on them.
When one has won 14 Majors and literally carries the sport in terms of ratings , crowds and dollars, they will get the bulk of the attention. I would guess Rory got a lot of coverage in Great Britain, for some of the same reasons.
I would like to see Tiger get back in his groove. He is the reason I started watching golf.
The media still pushing the Tiger as a new generation of Golfers emerges.
He stopped taking them when he realized he was facing exposure. Bonds did the same - and immediately spent almost a full season on the disabled list.
The Mickey Mantle syndrome.
LOL!
Another apologist for that cheating scum (golf & marital).
woods is first?
LOL!
Clearly you are ignoring the reality of Jack’s superior accomplishments vs the cheater’s.
Are you a leftist? Seriously. Are you now or have you ever been a leftist?
Seriously?
The leaders should get “the bulk” of attention...
I would add Bobby Jones at 3rd and move Woods to 6th...Maybe 7th, after Vardon....
There was a lengthy interview with Rose. I doubt the others were really wanting to talk.
I think it’s fair to say Tiger was “Just short”. He was LEADING The tournament standing on the 11th tee on the last day.. and, finished 1 stroke out of 2nd place... only 3 behind the leader. That’s certainly not “FAR off”.
A couple of very small mistakes, with severe penalty ruined Tiger’s chances. But, overall... he played VERY well.
