Francesco Molinari won the British Open on Sunday, giving him his first major title after emerging from a crowded pack including Tiger Woods in a wild final round at Carnoustie.
Molinari shot a bogey-free, 2-under 69 to finish on 8-under 276. He became the first Italian to capture a major championship.
Earlier, Tiger Woods played himself into contention, edging to within a stroke of the lead on the front nine.
Woods led briefly, but dropped out of the lead after a double-bogey at the 11th hole.
He sent his second shot into the gallery, with the ball rebounding out into the rough. He duffed his chip, then three-putted from off the green.

That’s true...I don’t remember all the screaming immediately after a shot before Tiger...
I used to go to practice rounds at Augusta and it was very, very polite...
Why all that money you think Tiger would have his own Comfortable Pillow
Spieth has been inconsistent all year. A double on a par 5? Wow, that killed his chances. He has been trending down all year...not sure what that is about. Last I saw he was around 40 in Fed Ex points. I like him a lot and as soon as he doubled, I turned off the TV.
IMO, his game sank when he began trying to be too perfect. He was at his best when he had a pretty free wheeling game. His tee off on 1 yesterday was magnificant and I thought he would take the Open from there. Alas, not to be. I hope he does not go the way of David Duval.
I hope Tiger has another Major win in his future. Im pulling for him.
Yeah. Spieth had nothing today.
I keep thinking Spieth will settle down and get his consistency back, when he’s got it he’s a great player.
Please explain to me how steroids would help you play golf better?
When Eldrick briefly took the lead today the media were slobbering all over themselves.
So damn glad he didn’t win!
So somehow its HIS fault because of the fans he attracted in 1997? The guy, warts aside, is arguably the best of all time. Between about 1998 and 2008, he utterly dominated the sport. If the networks are obsessed with him, its well deserved. He brings ratings.
“Imagine what Tiger might be like if he didnt have a back injury.”
It all started with his famous ‘knee-snap’.
You push your body too hard and things break.
I heard one of the announcers say “The Cat is back...”
They don't help you play baseball better, either. They do help you keep playing through injuries.
Between added strength and, more importantly, faster recovery from injuries, steroids/PEDs enable humans to play better.
Of all the US-based doctors tiger could have used, he chose a Canadian that had a history in dealing with steroids/PEDs including being busted by Customs.
Yep, I heard that...plus something about the “roar of a Tiger”.
Well seeing how long Tiger was out of action, they didn’t work very well.
“...The guy, warts aside, is arguably the best of all time...”
THAT is a stretch...Consider Bobby Jones, Harry Vardon, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Ben Hogan...
Consider the equipment and the condition of the courses some of the old guys used and played upon...
Support Free Republic, Folks!
Sorry, but tiger will NEVER be the best golfer of all time.
That honor will stay with Jack Nicklaus for a long, long time - perhaps forever.
In addition to Jack’s 18 Majors (obviously more than your Mr PED messiah), he also has 19 second place finishes in majors.
