James Strickland, the Army veteran who shot and killed a pit bull, shared his story with Action News Jax.
The owner of the pit bull Strickland killed, Moustapha Ba, spoke to us as well.
The men share love of their dogs and the pain of Wednesday morning.
There wasnt anything I had to do in many, many, years harder than take that dogs life, said Strickland.
Strickland said he regrets being in that position, but doesnt regret his decision to fatally shoot the pit bull.
He said doing so may have saved his dogs life.
Ba is asking what could have been done differently.
Hes part of my family so Im mourning him right now, said Ba.
Strickland said he was walking his service dog, a Weimaraner named Betty Boop, in the parking lot of the clinic when Ba's pit bull Dozier, charged them.
A witness named in the police report obtained by Action News Jax claims he saw Dozier "moving aggressively toward Strickland and his dog and heard Strickland tell the owner to get the dog back or he would shoot it.
The witness said Ba held on to Dozier but only for a moment.
He was down on the ground, struggling with the dog so hard that his shoes came off, said Strickland.
The report states Strickland pulled out his .38 revolver while the dogs were separated.
It states he gave a second warning that he would shoot if Dozier got away again.
"When he pulled the weapon, thats when I panicked and let the dog go," said Ba.
The witness said Dozier attacked again, prompting Strickland to fire.
The dog didnt really respond to that, attacked me and my dog again, and I shot him the second time it killed him, said Strickland. . .

It was the most vicious dog I have ever seen in my life.
Bella lunged at Isis probably about 5 or 6 times, not false lunges but true lunges. Isis managed to dodge the attacks, but she also tied me up in her leash, so I could not respond.
Isis was so scared of this dog that she completely emptied her bowel on the dogs face as it pursued her. I didn’t even know this occurred until I got her home and noticed her rear end was covered in some horrible smelling matter.
The police told me the other dog was covered in it. Bella scared the sh*t out of Isis. Literally.
It wasn’t until I freed myself from the leash that I was able to respond and end the attack.
One never truly recovers from a Vorpal Bunny attack.
I understand, don’t worry, it’s still waiting for you, just past that bush.
That is bad. I’m glad you and your dog both came out OK. Any breed can be mean or violent. It happens.
What really made me mad about that situation was the the owner did not try to stop her dog at all, which basically forced me to have to take physical action against the dog.
I don’t want to have to hurt anyone’s dog. I’m a dog lover.
You seem to have an issue with facts.
Who’s facts? My facts are rock solid.
You better hope its not gay
How on earth did you acquire a pet whistle-pig? (marmot, groundhog, etc.) Do tell!
She has PBDS. Its a thing with her.
Toenail fungus! I am now triggered!
LOL. Old Red can dish er out but he can’t take it.
If she posted about every Chihuahua bite that happened, there would be no room for anything else on FR. Its just pit bulls thank God.
I have a half breed pit/border collie. Smart and friendlier than my other dogs. Other dogs are not pits, but have people issues and will bite.
Not sure I can count on him for protection unless he’s gonna beat them to death with his tail!
The beagle/little dog mix is the dangerous one who has to be muzzled.
It is 100 percent the owner. EVERY FREAKING TIME, not the dog.
The OP is like a FUDD. One of those who likes .22 and 12 guage, but hates ARs.
A gun is a gun and a dog is a dog. Period.
I received a long involved semi-threatening email about how my pitbull was running loose and almost attacked a couple walking their dog. It was several paragraphs lecturing me on pitbulls and how his wife was attacked by a pit and I was careless..blah..blah.
I sent an email back “I don’t have a dog. I have 4 cats”. I know the pit in question and it doesn’t even bark so I doubt the whole story.
Hardly. There are lots of dog lovers who are not fans of the bully breeds.
This is a political forum if you hadnt noticed.
Primarily, a political site. It has always had other thread topics for discussion. If you don't like a thread, don't read it. Lots of Freepers like to discuss a variety of topics besides politics.
Frankly; I would feel worse about killing a dog than I would about killing a person who threatened me or mine.
I'm not sure that someone who would write such a statement should be suggesting that others go for psychological help.
Frankly it's because of people like you and a few others here I do feel that way. My dogs are far more important to me than you ghouls are.
Don't you have some babies to slap around or something? Why not leave the puppies alone for a while; like forever.
I bring common sense; something you clearly lack.
Now if you’re done beating up puppies; don’t you have some little old ladies to smack around? You know; your everyday job.
Boomer, let me enlighten you one small bit at a time, I don’t hate dogs. I’ve owned dogs. spent 2500$ to fix a Jacks leg that got run over and held her butt up everyday for a month so she couuld poop because her back leg was wired together. I love dogs. I have no reason to hate the bully breed, but at the same time i will not stand by while some dumb ass 100# airhead walks down the street being pulled along by her 70# bully or any other breed she/he/zed can’t handle. The bully breed needs to be controlled, the owners need to be the alpha- even you admit ithat rarely happens! Truth BOMB- an unregistered bully breed is nothing to f around with as a pet. Even a registered one can turn into a nightmare, thats why they don’t make good service animals or pets. ever seen a bully breed cop dog? why not? they don’t even make good drug sniffing dogs.
So your big answer along with the OP’s is to come to FR and talk smack about dogs in general and the bully breeds in particular.
That’s about as productive as a fart in a bubble bath.
No one cares. You’re preaching to the choir. We all know and if we didn’t before the daily dog beating threads by the OP; we sure do now. Want to fix this problem? Find a way to lessen the bully breed population. Whining here does absolutely nothing.
Don’t come here with ad nauseam statistics and stories about how this or that dog was out of control. Show up with solutions.
Let me say that again to make sure you get it. SHOW UP WITH SOLUTIONS! Not more whining. Be productive; not destructive. There is nothing constructive about posting these ridiculous threads day after day unless real viable solutions are offered. Even then it’s not going to do anything but at least they will have an air of being productive.
I’ve already said the best place to start is at the rescue shelters along with offering free spay and neutering to all Pit Bulls. See how that works? Productive; not destructive.
Push to get funding for those veterinarians to do the spay and neutering. It won’t be fixed overnight but it’s a lot better than wetting the bed every day like what’s happening here now.
Animals in general are 10x or more stronger than humans. Even small ones - and humans can never raise the intensity level of fighting for one’s life like an animal.
God created them to survive in the wild with physical strength, speed and ferociousness.
Humans? Not so much.
