The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.
From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed any time-and don't have to be about gardening.
Thanks. This is kind of a online testimony as we feel very blessed for being able to have this garden(s) and for its produce, and for those we can share it with. God made life to grow and reproduce, to man's benefit and which is all to His glory.
We have had no problem yet with anything eating the tomatoes (except people) which are just beginning to ripen with about 30 cherry toms picked so far, and which are like candy.
But the pics below are from 7-12, of the garden on the West side of the building, and the front/South, to be followed with some from today which shows the progress. Thank God.
What variety of cherry tomatoes?
It has been a good year for gardens in the NE i think. Thank God. Lots of sun, and a couple of very timely rains. And more (maybe too much) coming .
Pics below are from the West side and front, showing how populous the place is (like the city). Those on the West side as well as in my neighbors yard-wall section began from seed in April/May, and the toms in the front were from Home Depot. All but a small amount of the water for them came from the roof and was saved in 64 gal barrels. Bought a 12v pump for under 9.00 to pipe the water over, which has some Miracle-Gro in it, plus some old vitamin-mineral tablets.
The squirrels that used to be around out house are no more, as the must have ate the rat poison we put out. Plus some trees were chopped down,
Even a squirrel was evidently getting high in this city, since i found one "guarding" my bike when i went to unlock it, and there were two puncture holes in my tube of rubber cement that was in the basket. At first i suspected it was some kids, but when it happened again, i put it together with the behavior of the squirrel and concluded we had one glue-sniffing squirrel or more.
I forgot. I think the sign that comes with the bought plants is down in the ground, but not visible now. Plus the ones started from seed here were not labelled. Something like SuperSweets.
You’re making very efficient use of your space.
We have a bit more room as we live in a small town and the houses are not so close together.
Hello all. I have not fallen through a black hole and I promised pictures this year. We have had house guests for 3 weeks - 6 days to go and a few to recover. I’ll be posting more after that. We are finally getting some good rain after a few weeks of no rain at all. Picked the first green beans for dinner tonight. All lettuce and radishes done, getting broccoli every few days. Waiting on summer squash, melons, first tomatoes just starting to turn. Many other things done. I’m glad our garden was smaller this year. Last year I was overloaded and a lot of putting up and canning. Thanks greeneyes for keeping the threads going.
Those look fabulous!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well, I got peaches from one tree this week. First year it’s made and I got about 3 dozen. Something ate them all. It was human. Grandkids have been here for 2 weeks. Peaches were highly rated :)
I’ve got another tree that’s not ripe yet. It’s got about twice as many. Hoping they’re good as the first batch :)
Still getting peppers and squash. It was 107 yesterday. I’ve been too busy playing with kids to check today.
But the plants overall seem healthy, i think it can provide a greater harvest.

You mean often 6' btwn 3 deckers? And you would not believe the cost of them, even with about 3k sq. ft., a small yard and no parking.
Here
We are adapting chicken wire above and around our raised bed tomatoes. Getting the “doors” strategically placed is a challenge.
Damned tree rats just won’t give up !
A Deluge can really spoil a back yard party. :-0
Which “decent food processor” did you get?
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
This one:

It showed up on a couple of reviews as a good food processor for the money. Also, I have a small Cuisinart that is packed up in storage somewhere & I really liked it. I was pleased with the new one because the way the blade fits on/works is the same as the old one.

Had to do that as well.
I don’t because I want to keep the calories down but that is a very popular way to store them.
The hardware cloth should last a good, long time and would be a good solution. It won’t rust if it’s not exposed to air.
We line all of our raised beds with a thick layer of cardboard - but we don’t have burrowing critter problems; Patrol Cats on Duty 24/7. ;)
Garden has EXPLODED as she does this time every year. We had 3" of rain this week, so it's soggy! One of my HUGE Sunflowers fell and is blocking the aisle, but Beau will help me right her, today.
'Soroya' Sunflower. AAS Winner, very little pollen so they make a nice cut flower. Throws out a lot of branches, so you get a ton of flowers off of one big plant.
'Atris' Pepper. A new variety for me, but it's going to go in the regular line-up. HUGE sweet peppers good for frying and for adding to Salsa and my 'V-12' Juice.
'Chef's Yellow' tomato. One I always grow. Nice slicer, great for BLTs!
'Chef's Pink' Tomato. New for me this season, but the 'Chef's' series produces uniform slicers in a range of colors.
'Mariana' Paste-type Tomato. I like the paste-types for Salsa - fewer seeds and more meat!
'Juliet' Tomato. These are the ones I oven-dry with EVOO and Italian spices. We eat them like candy.
'Coral Dream' Zinnia. Love the color! Bought these from Steve Cushman, my 'Poinsettia Broker' when I worked for Jung's. His greenhouse is in Belmont, WI. I live much much closer to him now, and he wants me to work for him, but I'm too busy being retired! :)
'Sweeter Yet' Cucumbers. 'Dinosaur' Kale. Red and yellow onions, Crookneck yellow and 'EZ-Pick' Green Zucchini. 'Ancho' peppers. Red Begonia behind is called, 'Million Kisses' and the Yellow is just your everyday Tuberous Begonia. My onions were terrible this season. Too wet and too much nitrogen in the soil.
A small portion of my Garlic crop. German Porcelain, Hardneck.
Filing Under: 'I Don't Remember Planting THAT!' My boy, Boyd.
