American Airlines and its dress code requirements for non-revenue passengers have caused a lot of controversy in past years. Remember last year’s #LeggingsGate when United created a stir on social media after denying boarding two “non-rev” female passengers from boarding because they were wearing leggings?
Non-revenue passengers fly on stand-by because a friend or family member works for a particular airline company, but American had a strict dress code policy used to prevent these passengers from boarding their planes if a passenger is not properly clothed. Last year, the airline decided to relax its dress code policy and allows passengers to wear whatever they want — as long as the clothing is “neat and clean” and does not “offend or distract.”
So when a non-rev passenger tried boarding an American flight from Miami to New York in tattered, ripped denim shorts, the airline told her her outfit was inappropriate. The passenger, Nardia Bennet, followed up by posting a 28-minute live stream berating American and its employees.
The video features Nardia swearing at employees demanding that the airline treat her and her daughter with more respect, but the airline is saying the way Nardia handled the situation and yelled at employees also prevented her from boarding the flight. Nardia continued on Facebook on Thursday that she plans on suing American because of the way they treated her. The video showed no signs of mistreatment, but it’s up to American to decide whether a passenger’s outfit meets their standards, even with its more relaxed policy.
So I noticed in the video she was flying free on her cousins pass. Is that available for cousins?
Since she’s not an employee, she’s flying under some other employee’s name. That person is pretty much screwed. Perhaps he should be.

In the sixties they wouldn’t have made you remove your coat, tie, belt, shoes wallet, watch and hat. Neither would they have searched your briefcase.
Can you imagine a woman in a girdle from the sixties with the metal clips to hold up stockings going through TSA?
I am not sure the analogy holds up.
That said, I am fairly casually dressed when traveling and have never had an issue with any airline (Except once when I had to wear an obnoxious tourist T-shirt because someone’s child on a previous flight threw up all over me)
The funniest part of her video is when she states “This is what I call discrimination against (pause while she decides which victim label will pay highest dividends) women.”

I’ve flown non-rev some. Relative works for an airline.
Sport coat used to be the minimum dress. Slacks and sport shirt ok now.
The way it was explained to me was, Non-revs are company representatives, real or perceived and should dress accordingly.
This witch was correctly refused, and the more she objects the less likely she will get on a ride.
Each Carrier has different rules. Last I knew (20 years since I flew) for us it would have been the lowest class available. By class I mean Active Employees at the top then Dependant Family, Retired, Kin to a certain point. Again each Carrier is different.
So if you have Family in the business you’re going to have to ask them.
And it’s not really free, somebody is paying for it. The Employee may cover it and the Family member doesn’t know it and therefore they think it’s free.

FWIW, in the Navy we have a civilian dress code we have to abide by when we visit foreign countries, typically a collared shirt and at a minimum, Dockers. It's for the same reason.
American Airlines should do some damage control.
Step one would be to fire the employee who enabled their free travel. That would send a message to other employees who might then show a bit more discernment.
Also if they cause too much trouble they can cause the Employee to lose privileges.
If I was the cousin providing the tickets I would be telling my cuz to SHUT THE HELL UP!!! And I would also tell the cuz that there will be no more Tix for her anymore.

I remember my days at American, after my service time. The wife and I were flying ,as no revs, to Bermuda. The Gate agent said my wife could not fly because she wearing”gaucho” style pants, meaning the pants came up to above her calves! I was going back and forth with agent, she was obviously having a good time with this. I finally had it and told her , since I was a line mechanic , I will personally ground any aircraft on the gate she is working and make it look like her fault! We had a very nice time in Bermuda.
Those were the days. If I didn’t know better I’d think You were Me! And You had My suitcase;)
I remember when the 747 came out Mom and I took one from LAX to IAH to check it out. Very impressive for an 11 year old kid, even one that grew up in the heyday of air travel. I remember sitting backwards in the front of DC-*’s, getting tours of the Cockpit, the Stewardess giving out Metal Wings. I always thought that the service on 707’s was nice but WOW!!! That 747 was “the bomb” the Lounge up in the hump, one could have pitched a Pup Tent in Coach and First Class - heck you could have played football in it.
Heck, many of the women I see in an airport terminal are wearing pajamas and look as if they just got out of bed.
This woman has no grounds for a lawsuit as she was on a Non-Rev Pass provided by a family member. They may find a lawyer to take the case but there is no way they will succeed.
The Employee will be lucky to keep their job thanks to the bitchy heathenette cousin.
I’ve flown non-rev. You LISTEN to the airline, they’re providing the free service. Don’t like it - buy a ticket. It’s clowns like this that mess it up for the other 99.9%. They need to be ARRESTED for disturbing the peace.
Well I just got back from going to dinner at a nice restaurant and while I find nice casual wear acceptable a lot times, I do think there times dressing in a coat and tie is the thing to do.
Now at the place I was just at the people coming in wore clothing that might be appropriate for the swimming pool or at a camp site. Not for a nice restaurant that is kind of pricey. Now I like to wear khaki’s, a button down dress shirt, and boat shoes, slip on a blue blazer and you can go anywhere.
When my son was a captain for a Delta affiliated regional airline, I flew a number of times between Seattle and Houston. Always wore slacks, polo shirt, and dressy casual shoes.
Met my wife on line. Flew down to Houston from the Oacific Northwest about 20 times over a year before moving down to Houston. Spent 4-5 times overnight at MSP. If you have to spend a night at an airport, you can do much worse than MSP.
First, I appreciated being able to fly for free. Second, there were a few occasions when I was seated in first class. If you are not dressed nicely as a non-rev, you aren’t ever going to be seated in first class.
My son is a pilot for the Big Delta. Don’t fly non-rev anymore because getting to and out of PDX or SEA is very iffy. Now that he flies for the Big Delta, my priority is higher, so I might give it a go in the next year or so.
