JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A 6-year-old girl attacked by a dog Sunday morning has died, according to her father.
Police said Jaelah Smith was attacked by a dog the family was pet sitting in their Arlington home.

"Unfortunately my princess is no longer with us. I would like for you guys to keep my family in your prayers"
Police and firefighters were called to a house on Herrick Drive about 10:15 a.m. Sunday by a neighbor who heard screaming and saw the girl's mother carry the girl's unconscious body outside.
I just kept hearing somebody (yell), 'Help me, help me!'" Timothy Hightower told News4Jax. She came out of the house and laid the baby down right there and told us to call the paramedics, and thats what we did.
Jaelah was taken to Memorial Hospital with what police described as very serious, life-threatening injuries. She was transferred to Wolfson Children's Hospital, where she later died.

Excellent point about most pit attacks come from unregistered breeders. unfortunately, most pit bull puppies dont get their full temperament until they are about 2 years old. what breeder is going to hold a pit bull for 2 years before they sell them. And how many generations of pits will it take to breed out the agressiveness? the breed pair may be excellent dogs, but genetics runs deeper than one generation.
If you’re telling me that a breeder needs to hold on to a PB for 2 years in order to socialize it, then maybe the dogs are too dangerous to own. We don’t allow owership of large cats, ex lions, mountain lions, maybe we should treat PBs the same way.
Then maybe it is time to consider prohibiting legal ownership, the same way we do with large, carnivorous, wild animals...
Absolutely. Some years back, I was savaged on this board by dog apologists for stating that it was irresponsible for dog owners to allow their animals to run loose outside with no fence to restrain them, especially in places with leash laws. I was assured that dogs would respect the boundaries of their "territory", and pose no threat to anyone. We know that's not always true.
Even among FReepers, some people can only be reasoned with by means of an a$$-whippin.
The shelter here lists them under terriers need homes. I was looking for a rat terrier or a jack russel. Every single one was a pit bull terrier. My friend who is heavily involved with the local shelters told me if a small terrier comes in theyre adopted within hours.
NORK won’t reply to you. You have stated fact.

Never saw that. Link?
I would love to see who attacked you.
You have my sympathies. I had to pick up my 12 year old brother at a neighbors house, his eyelid almost torn from his face by a pure bred German Shepard.
We have a 5 year old kid in our town who had his ear torn off by a dog.
What needs to happen is insurance companies will need to stop insuring the home owners with these dogs, and let the owner take out a policy that costs about a 1000 a month for a pitt bull type breed. Make them register, and charge them a 1000 to register, with a prison sentence if they fail to register. If they refuse to insure, they would then have to sign a state form that 90 percent of all they make and all they own will go to the victim for the remainder of their life. If an owner comes into town with one of them and fails to register the beast, put them in jail for six months.
The damages I have seen are numerous and horrendous. Half a million in damages is not unusual. Keeping these dogs in the house with a little kid is insane. Its worse than leaving a loaded gun on a coffee table with a five year old walking around the house. The parents who let this kid alone with this beast, they are also to blame. I will never ever leave my kid with one of these animals.
A niece had a pit bull...said it was the sweetest dog ever. Very vocal about defending the breed. Then she got pregnant and suddenly the dog was “re-homed.” Said she couldn’t take any chances with a baby in the house.
Yep. A pit bull attacking my lab puppy in my arms at a dog park is what prompted me to get my ccw. I dont take my lab to dog parks anymore but if such an incident were ever to occur again, I would pull out my gun and empty the magazine right in the pit bulls face.
You working for Hillary these days?
Yep; what could possibly go wrong with that scenario? /sarcasm
Now see there. I was being polite and civil then you come along and ruin it.
You don’t have the brain power to be in this conversation so your voice is like a whisper in the wind. It might be there but it means nothing.
Nope; just a law abiding regular American citizen who knows someone must have intent to commit a crime.
Why? Were you wondering if we might have met at one of her rallies?
Maybe she would let you take her cat before the dog kills it and she has to make the usual excuses. She obviously cares nothing for the cat’s life.
Sorry youve suffered so. I hadnt thought of it in those terms, but youre right; we are so removed from the potential threat of wild animals that we dont consider the possibility of any type of animal attack.
Thank you for sharing your perspective from one who has experience.
I liked your post.
My family has always owned ‘bully breeds’: Dobermans, German Shepherds, Great Danes, Boxers, and now I own 2 rescues that are half pit bull.
We are all still alive and kicking. We handle them responsibly, but unfortunately not everyone does this. I see this as the owner’s fault, not the dog’s.
