The original comments, given in a wide-ranging interview with Recode, were made in response to questions about what Facebook was doing to combat fake news and sites, such as InfoWars, that promoted conspiracy theories.
In Myanmar, also known as Burma, Facebook has been accused by UN investigators of facilitating violence against Rohingya Muslims by allowing anti-Muslim hate speech and fake news.
The social network has now said that it will begin removing misinformation that could lead to people being physically harmed.
When asked about its policy on fake news, Mr Zuckerberg offered, without prompting, the example of Holocaust deniers.
"I'm Jewish and there's a set of people who deny that the Holocaust happened," he told reporter Kara Swisher. "I find it deeply offensive. But at the end of the day, I don't believe that our platform should take that down because I think there are things that different people get wrong. I don't think that they're intentionally getting it wrong.
"Everyone gets things wrong and if we were taking down people's accounts when they got a few things wrong, then that would be a hard world for giving people a voice and saying that you care about that."
The comments caused a storm of protest.
Editor of anti-fascist magazine Searchlight Gerry Gable told the BBC: "Zuckerberg could kill much of this dangerous material getting worldwide distribution - but he is a like a spoilt teenager."
"Because of his financial powers, he just does a bit of tinkering without understanding how this material could inspire crazy people to firebomb synagogues, mosques or churches."
NBC News reporter Benjy Sarlin tweeted asking whether Mr Zuckerberg thought the debate over whether the Holocaust had happened was in "good faith".

Wow! I agree with Zuckerberg. Amazing.
You don't justify this policy on whether someone got it a little wrong or a lot wrong or didn't think they were wrong at all.
You base and justify your policy on free speech grounds. You value free speech unless the speech would incite violence or otherwise endanger someone.
And I mean real violence, not the PC definition of someone frowning at you or saying something you don't like.
“Editor of anti-fascist magazine Searchlight Gerry Gable told the BBC: “Zuckerberg could kill much of this dangerous material getting worldwide distribution - but he is a like a spoilt teenager.””
Irony uber alles.
The Facebook monitors should have two choices only:
1) Let it through;
2) Call the cops for threats of violence.
Holocaust deniers. Let people be stoopid... Deniers are aholery. Expose them. Let them hide like cockroaches doesnt work.
I think there is a very good chance that zuck is a muzzie. Go on Facebook and state ANYTHING about islam that is negative, despite how true it is, and see how fast you are sentenced to "Facebook Jail".
As soon as we add one asterisk to free speech other people will want to add to the list.
That's how we got runaway 'hate crime' and 'hate speech' laws.
And if Zuckerberg gives in (which he will) the SPLC and the ADL will decide what else needs to be banned.
[ Holocaust deniers. Let people be stoopid... Deniers are aholery. Expose them. Let them hide like cockroaches doesnt work. ]
They are like Flat Earhters, a good chunk of flat earthers KNOW the earth is round they just like to be asshats and troll people, the rest of the flat earthers are retarded.
This may be an unpopular opinion but if we are to keep our right of free speech, we have to allow Holocaust deniers to say what they want.
But I revere free speech and have no problem with holocaust deniers having the right to speak or publish about their beliefs.
I was raised that our country is so free we are to let Nazis and KKK have their marches, Voice their opinions, and let Good ideas win naturally over Evil ones. Im ok with it.
(And I still think Zuck is an a hole even if we agree on this small point.)
Isn’t it great that one man gets to decide what a billion people get to see and hear?
What could possibly go wrong? :-(
He is immature. His family member were directly effected by Holocaust. His family had spent lot of money bringing Soviet , Polish Jews to US and helped them settle here in USA. I know one Russian family directly received fund for his father and family to settle in USA plus short duration in Italy for Asylum application etc.
Its sad, Zuckerberg is scared of Media.
And the broader they define it into anything with which they disagree the less effective their tantrums become. Thankfully, most of them are too dumbed down and indoctrinated to understand this and so they continue to dig that hole to irrelevancy.
George Carlin made a lot of money saying the seven words that TV prohibited.
That’s what these fools just don’t understand. Is there a right to deny the Holocaust, say the n-word or whatever reasonable people deem disgusting? Actually there is. SHOULD anyone say such things? That’s another matter. But this is the beauty of the 1A. It lets us identify the a-holes among us. One of the rare times I ever agreed with the ALL was when Abe Foxman long ago said censorship is the WORST way to deal with hate speech. The best way is to CHALLENGE it with more speech.
