Survey: Military binge drinking drops, but this service stood out in a bad way

About one-third of the service personnel surveyed met the criteria indicating hazardous drinking and possible alcohol use disorder, with 30 percent reporting that they binge drank in the past month. Among Marines, that figure jumped to 42.6 percent.

Binge drinking is defined as more than five drinks for men or more than four for women in one sitting, according to the report, issued by Rand and based on a survey that was conducted from late 2015 to early 2016.

That rate was down from 33.1 percent in the previously reported survey from 2011, but it’s still high enough to cause concern, researchers said. Drinking problems could be addressed by shifting the culture and climate surrounding alcohol use, such as communicating disapproval of heavy drinking and changing on-base alcohol and sales policies, according to the report.

I know - we read all the stuff left on the walls and tables from the sixties.

45 in a 35-mph speed trap. Elen said another recruit left for boot camp last week after getting a speeding ticket here, so it’s not a problem as long as you pay.

"As a former member of The Corps I can tell you I was "shocked" by this revelation."

Don't know which era you were in the Corps, but my experience (between 1951 & 1957) tells me that 42% is a huge drop from my era...{:-)

10 over is ok. If it was I think 20 over or classified as reckless driving it could be a problem.

It wasn’t reckless: she just didn’t know what the speed limit was until the cop informed her. Took a guess and was wrong.

Ahhh, Camp Fuji! I was stationed there in 1976 when my son was born Stateside. I finally got to see him 9 months later.

Are the Quonset hut barracks & BOQs still there?

“shocked” being sarcastically shocked as in “I’m shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here!”

Of course not. She's probably way too smart to over speed.

When I was in we still had the God awful 55 mph. We had guys get tickets going over 75 and they caught hell! One of the many many reasons I could not wait to get out and be free.

Entirely unrelated.

PTSD is the result of unpleasant experiences that the brain does not have the opportunity to process into memories, usually because survival takes priority for an extended time.

We have more PTSD now because we are far better at keeping people debilitated by it on the battlefield from getting killed .

Read some studies on how many cases there are believed to have been in the immediate wake of the civil war, and how those men were treated.

They’re all jacked. Supplements are the biggest sellers OCONUS and steroids are more common than any drug. Plus, most members are constantly deployed where there’s nothing to do but go to the gym. Hell, even some Air Force guys look military these days.

The only reason I see for any drop in drinking is GO-1: no alcohol in the AOR. Even the R and R bases limit you to 3 lousy drinks and shots are measured like it’s gold. The only way you’d feel anything was smokin a big stogie and slamming the three pitiful slugs as quick as possible. Now, the bastards outlawed sending the troops free cigars!

We use to have the mandatory battalion parties where we were limited to 3 beers per man. We found a way around this by finding a non-drinker. I was friends with a Jehovah Witness so I was good.

People always find ways around it. We had one NCO ordered vodka and stashed it in a water bottle. God knows how long he saved up, but he damned near got alcohol poisoning before he was arrested. He was court-martialed. Definitely not worth it.

49 in a 35. A state cop got her, not locals. Oh, well ... a learning experience. Both her older brothers pulled themselves together after paying their first ticket. On the other hand, for a while, it seemed like my oldest daughter was trying to get a speeding ticket in every state!

Europe has been tough on alcohol for a long time. On the other hand, don’t be in the left lane on the autobahns at less than 100 mph! At least that’s the way it used to be.
