About one-third of the service personnel surveyed met the criteria indicating hazardous drinking and possible alcohol use disorder, with 30 percent reporting that they binge drank in the past month. Among Marines, that figure jumped to 42.6 percent.
Binge drinking is defined as more than five drinks for men or more than four for women in one sitting, according to the report, issued by Rand and based on a survey that was conducted from late 2015 to early 2016.
That rate was down from 33.1 percent in the previously reported survey from 2011, but its still high enough to cause concern, researchers said. Drinking problems could be addressed by shifting the culture and climate surrounding alcohol use, such as communicating disapproval of heavy drinking and changing on-base alcohol and sales policies, according to the report.
OORAH!
We Marines do everything BETTER! Even our liver killing is better than the other services!
Define “one sitting.”
Five drinks over a one or two hour lunch is a lot (although a little short of a “binge” in my book).
Five drinks over the course of a barbecue that starts around lunchtime and ends after the sunset sounds like light-to-moderate consumption.
“Binge drinking is 5 drinks or more at one sitting?”
That’s just the warm up between 5 and 6.
Sounds about right. These guys somehow always ended up at the back of the formation. But these buttheads would not warn us, they just let loose.
I was a peace time grunt so we really did not have a job.
Back in my day, five was a good start to the weekend...
When it was finally legal (my 21st birthday) between bars and party stores I do believe I spent five straight days somewhere between buzzed and incoherent and barely mobile. No more having to ask friends “you fly I’ll buy”!
Semper Fi.

We use to drink at the e-club before going out. Much cheaper.
Unfortunately you are right. In my ex’s unit a Marine, who did not normally drink, got drunk on a Thursday night and puked in his shit can. Friday morning barracks inspection was a career ender for him. He suddenly was labeled as having a drinking problem.
The pricks made us get liberty cards and use the buddie system in Okinawa Japan, and that was the 80’s! Also had a curfew. But to be fair, that was only for us grunts. All the pogs could do what they wanted.
Unfortunately, depending on the ticket it could be a career ender now.
“Those count as fruit juices.......................part of a balanced diet!...............”
I use for the vitamin C and to wash down statins and blood pressure meds in the morning.
were these Marines grunts by any chance?
That’s why Marines are bald and weathered.
I recall a line from a military Science Fiction story. A recently graduated cadet is taken to the Officers Club by his new CO. Cadet is given shot after shot of whiskey, with “down the hatch” toasts to the service, the ship, the unit, etc. CO tells cadet, “First we will teach you how to drink. Later you will learn why we drink.”
“Nannystate and it is MADD that led us here. The founder left the organization when she saw it becoming a neoprohibitionist movement which was never her intention.”
Exactly. That’s why I don’t eat out anymore. If I can’t have a couple drinks before dinner without risking the farm then screw it.
“Binge drinking is up?”
For sure during the 8 horrible Obama years. Of course binge drinking to these schmucks is a beer.
” I say men in the real war deserve to let off the pressure sometimes. Ive understood it was like that for some Air Force flight crew members. So, I think the survey is worthless.”
They’d pass out if they learned about WW2 guys.
