The keto diet has been a proven tool to help people lose weight and even fight off inflammation. But there's another chronic condition that the keto diet can successfully treat: diabetes. Specifically, type 2 diabetes.
We spoke to Steve Phinney, MD, PhD, chief medical officer at Virta Health, who explained which patients can benefit the most from the keto diet, and how to successfully use the diet to treat type 2 diabetes. He stressed that the treatment of type 2 diabetes with the keto diet should be done under close medical supervision, especially if the patient takes medication that lowers blood sugar or blood pressure as it can lead to dangerous side effects.
But once you get the go-ahead from your doctor, here's how it works:
In addition to helping regulate blood sugar levels and fighting insulin resistance, Dr. Phinney notes that the keto diet has powerful anti-inflammatory effects. Since inflammation may be a cause of diabetes, this is especially beneficial for type 2 diabetes patients.
When done properly and under medical supervision, a ketogetnic diet can help reverse type 2 diabetes. If you're thinking of giving it a shot, be sure to talk to your doctor or healthcare provider to create an effective, sustainable plan.

Every word you say is true. Sadly, even early breast cancer is used this same way.
I think anyone should be able to go low or even medium low carb (under 100g a day) without informing any doctor. If you are on insulin you would still be testing, right? So you can adjust your dose yourself if youre somewhat intelligent. Eventually you can get a doc to read you and test you and go off insulin or meds.
No doubt.
I even believe in chemtrails now.
Still not too sure about reptilians though unless it’s like a lizard brain deal. I will never believe in shape shifters.
:)
When you say must subtract fiber from carbs please help me understand. As an example I drink veggie juice which has 10 grams of carbs per serving but it is broken down to 2 grams of dieter fiber and 8 grams of sugar so does that mean I only count the sugar part for my daily carb amount limit?
Excellent!
Sadly no surprise from the professionals. They have too much equity in faulty education to investgate further.
They helped kill my diabetic father.
You are absolutely making stuff up, or espousing pure bs you read in a book. For most of human history, fruit composed a very small part of the human diet and only in a short season. Now lack of fruit causes cancer?
How much fruit did an Inuit eat? None. Same with plains Indians. Little to zero. Bet they had zero cancer until they quit eating a meat based diet.
Why not. Many societies never touched fruit. For most of human history we ate fruit only in season for a few short months at best. Now avoiding it is a problem?
Please explain?
Yes, so in your example, the net carbs would be 8. My work office has a small pack of almonds with 6 carbs and 4 fiber, meaning the net carbs is 2 (6-4). Fiber counts as a carb in the traditional scale, but your body doesn’t process fiber like other carbs (which it sees as sugar).
My cholesterol numbers improved on the diet. I am eating a lot of fat!
Thanks. Too many government bureaucracies. Lol.
Day one and I woke up with a headache BUT I feel like I just recovered from a bad cold/flu, achey and tired but not feeling like I am sick. Can stopping all sugar and lowering carb intake to below 25 grams have that much of an effect that quickly?
ADM produces a lot of those grains. Farm Bureau is a huge K Street force too.
It’s a poison pyramid.
Personal experience: Yes. Type II here, halved my med and felt my first low in...ever.
I feel better than I have in 30 years.
My kid has Type 1, since 19 months old.
Yes, what they teach these folks is pretty crazy. They should be pushing the keto diet on young type 1’s from the get go.
The diets they ACTUALLY put them on? All of this crazy diabetic friendly chemo stuff that tastes like a janitorial product.
Meats, cheeses, creams. Wanna cheat? Eat a ton of ice cream and bolus for the sugar. The low sugar ice cream is pretty good now.
Absolutely. Drink lots of water.
We need each of us to stay around a while longer. It took so long to get our Reagan 2.0.
How’s day two?
Thanks for asking. Day two and now three is two things. I feel like I am recovering from the flu tired and achey in the muscles BUT I am not hungry at all AND my joints are not hurting like they do normally (I was encouraged to try low carb/keytogenic by a friend who had read it helps with inflamation in the joints)
if this holds I see no reason I cannot maintain this change of life. I like the food. I will miss bread and pasta but not so much sugar I was never a sweets eater. I would have it occasionally but candy and pastries though I enjoyed them I could easily do without. But I would always crave bread and pasta and potatoes etc. What seems incredible to me right now is that I am not craving any of those things. I figured I would be in the kitchen rubbing the bread container and sniffing it because it contained a fresh and home made loaf of peasant bread. I haven't craved it once. Thank you all for the info and here is hoping I can get healthy enough to enjoy outdoor activities and traveling again! (My doctors sure have not gotten the results that i've gotten so far using info gleaned from the thread.)
Actually, the Inuit ate fruit in season. There are many berries that grow in the tundra. Also rose hips. Vitamin C is just as necessary as essential fats. Its available almost everywherethough not in forms most moderns would recognize. Paleo cultures didnt eat apples and oranges, but all consumed available fruits such as cacti, plums and berries.
I’m type 1. Switched to keto last December. I was not really overweight, but have lost 20 pounds of middle-age spread. A1C went from 7.3 to 5.3. Bolus insulin eliminated entirely and basal insulin decreased by a third. Lows are very rare and highs are nonexistent. Low carb is THE answer to diabetes.
