A big-screen transfer for Downton Abbey has been rumoured for almost as long as the show has been on television. But on Friday the movie was confirmed, with creator Julian Fellowes scripting, The Book Thiefs Brian Percival to direct and Universal Studios to distribute.
Production will start later this summer, with a release next year likely. Plot details remain under wraps, but it is expected the action will pick up directly from the last seasons finale, which was set in 1926.
When the television series drew to a close it was our dream to bring the millions of global fans a movie, said producer Gareth Neame, and now, after getting many stars aligned, we are shortly to go into production. Julians script charms, thrills and entertains, and in Brian Percivals hands we aim to deliver everything that one would hope for as Downton comes to the big screen.

Zzzzzz...
My wife will be thrilled.
But she’s going to have to take a girlfriend with her.
Because I would rather stick needles in my eyes.
Why is this show so popular? Isn’t it just an Edwardian soap opera?
Downton Abbey!
I’m busy on my script for Downtown Detroit.
I like historical stuff.
The same reason I enjoy Endeavor.
Reminds me of the Tracy Ulman’s impression of Dame Judi Dench for some reason.
Well, yeah!
Can’t wait for this to come out...except for Mary the Insipid...
The first season was good. I love British time series. But Julian Fellows phoned it in for the rest of the time the show was on air.
When they focused the last two seasons on the ugly sister, I had to force my way through until I couldnt take no more. Like watching paint dry.
Same here.
I’m looking forward to this movie.
What is Endeavor?
Not Edwardian, but yes.
I did not at all expect to like “Downton Abbey”, but I did!!! It’s so well done and I cared about the characters.
My husband really liked “Downton Abbey” also. This is totally out of character for him, he hates British costume dramas.
(.....hmmmmmmmm, do you think my husband is going gay on me !?!)
Younger version of Inspector Morse.
Typical well done and confusing British mystery show.
Nice visuals, classic cars, and period stuff.
Another good period series is House Of Elliot.
I discovered it via French & Saunders parody - House Of Idiot.
Excellent news.
With an extended film format, they will have time to kill off the entire cast, leaving the treacherous butler Thomas smirking atop the rubble as the credits roll.
VERY high production values and top notch acting ... but yes, it is a soap.
You do care about the characters though.
What does he thing of the sodomitic butler?
My mother is going to love this!
PBS began rerunning the series from the first episode on July 1. Its every bit as engrossing as it was the first time around. Downtown Abbey will go down as one of the best series of all time. Im so glad to hear about the new movie.
I watch the series because of her. Great role with perfect delivery.
