The U.S. Navy announced new hair rules for female sailors his week, saying they can now wear dreadlocks, ponytails and styled buns while in uniform. The Navy's announcement came in a live broadcast on its Facebook page on Tuesday with Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson and Chief of Naval Personnel Adm. Robert Burke, The Huffington Post reported. Richardson said the naval branch enlisted a team of six female sailors to help devise the new grooming standards, which he noted were also based on feedback from the sailors' peers.
If youve got a recommendation, we just demonstrated that that recommendation can make things happen, the admiral said in the broadcast. If you make a good proposal and we can make it fit, we can make it happen. As part of the move, braids, ponytails and styled buns will be permissible for female sailors unless the hairstyle is deemed to present an occupational hazard. Female sailors will also be permitted to style their hair below the collar of their shirt.
Petty Officer 1st Class Jacqualynn Leak, who has had dreadlocks since 2014, led efforts behind the reversal. I wanted to make an argument so compelling that every reason my chain of command could give me for why dreadlocks were banned could easily be rebutted with facts, she told The Huffington Post.

Good effing luck running something more serious than a rowboat under such conditions.
[Man-bun]
Neighbors kid has this. He lets it hang down on the side of his face as it comes out of the top of his head.
Absolutely ridiculous looking. He’ll get it caught in something soon like a car door.
Makes him look like one of those “transmissions”
“But if a woman WANTS to do grunt work (up to and including combat), she certainly can. But only if she wants to.”
I’m afraid “wants” should have nothing to do with it. Any person should only do work in the military that they are capable of doing. Otherwise, they are a danger to their teammates.
Letting people do jobs that they are incapable of doing because they wanted to and no one had the balls to tell them no, is one of the reasons we are where we are.
“Anybody else here remember the stuff in Zumwalts Z-grams?”
Oh yeah (raising my hand)! Lots of changes made by Admiral Zumalt back then.
When the Corps did a study showing how terribly gender-integrated units perform, and Mabus tossed it in the trash with some inane remark about diversity, says quite a.lot.
It looks like a huge chore to wash dreadlocks. They must be undone, washed and redone. Must take hours to do. They must not get washed often.

when the public questioned the decision of letting a known wolf Islamonazi who was in communication with Al Qaeda continue to serve up to and beyond the day he shot of US men women and children at Ft. Hood, big brass cried about how it would be a BIGGER TRAGEDY if somehow diversity of our military was impacted.
Welcome back to the 1970s USN. It will take a few machinery related deaths before this PC idiocy is gone.
I have never seen .. either personally or in digital/photographic/television displays .. dreadlocks that looked clean. So I would have to say that I agree with your final statement ...
“When the Corps did a study showing how terribly gender-integrated units perform,”
Gender only applies to pronouns, I was taught that in grade school and I’m sticking with it. There are only two sexes but at least three genders.
Apparently some people have nothing better to do with their time than carry around a headful of dirty braids that make them look like Medusa.
Sounds like sexism if the man can’t wear them.
I thought sexism was bad?
Actually I just read up on washing dreadlocks and they are washed with special shampoos while tied up in dreadlocks. This will only get them half clean (my opinion) so I guess a few times a year the hair is fully undone and fully washed.
Why?
So, we are going to allow dreadlocks and ponytails, onboard ship I suppose and the next GD time we have an incident like the USS COLE and one or two of the females cannot properly don their self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) in less than 10 seconds and Sailor's die because their F'n hair prevented a proper seal...Then I guess the dumb a$$ MFers that come up with these stupid ideas will collectively scratch their heads and ask the same stupid F'n question they always do after we lose lives because of stupid decisions, "how could this have been prevented." Well DUH!!!!
I am glad I am retired and don't have to deal with this stupid $hit anymore.
I would think this interferes with some of the equipment I wore when I was in. Did they also overhaul of the equipment that required excessive hire to keep you safe?
And what about machinery spaces? That equipment is going to grab somebody by the hair and pull them into a machine.
” I’d say close to half the crew was female. “
And the other half were maniacal fappers with severe prostate aches.
Looks like some of 'em didn't need to be fapping.
