The U.S. Navy announced new hair rules for female sailors his week, saying they can now wear dreadlocks, ponytails and styled buns while in uniform. The Navy's announcement came in a live broadcast on its Facebook page on Tuesday with Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson and Chief of Naval Personnel Adm. Robert Burke, The Huffington Post reported. Richardson said the naval branch enlisted a team of six female sailors to help devise the new grooming standards, which he noted were also based on feedback from the sailors' peers.
If youve got a recommendation, we just demonstrated that that recommendation can make things happen, the admiral said in the broadcast. If you make a good proposal and we can make it fit, we can make it happen. As part of the move, braids, ponytails and styled buns will be permissible for female sailors unless the hairstyle is deemed to present an occupational hazard. Female sailors will also be permitted to style their hair below the collar of their shirt.
Petty Officer 1st Class Jacqualynn Leak, who has had dreadlocks since 2014, led efforts behind the reversal. I wanted to make an argument so compelling that every reason my chain of command could give me for why dreadlocks were banned could easily be rebutted with facts, she told The Huffington Post.

Who’s to say who’s a female these daze?
Certainly not The Navy.
Man-bun
How do they keep their long hair out of those toilets they scrub?
This is a very dangerous idea.Having long hair especially in engeneering spaces.
Only men will be required to do the grunt work. Women get to administrate.
How about beards? Why can't guys have beards in light of this decision?
And if all else fails, the built in "get out of jail free" card, in the form of a pregnancy, can intervene.
Maybe some black muslims can raise that argument.
Dreads are filthy. Unsanitary. Disgusting. They should not only be banned in the military but in food service and medical care.
A few idiots having their scalps ripped off after their hair gets caught in power equipment will have a salutary effect - or maybe they will demand that they not be assigned to any equipment spaces.
Damn....that sounds like our government...!
This is not my dad’s navy. Nobody in thr chain of command, NOBODY, could offer a simple explanation of why dreadlocks and styles hair below the collar is a bad idea? NOBODY had the simple nads to say “sailor, get out of my office and do not waste anyone’s time with this BULLSHIT.”
Anybody else here remember the stuff in Zumwalt’s Z-grams?
A short haircut on military personnel accomplished many subtle objectives. People who look the same, feel the same. A barrier is created between them and us. Us being the military unit, the them is everyone else. And, the muting of psychological uniqueness is part of military discipline.
All out the window now.
AMEN!! Dreadlocks ARE filthy!! They don’t wash them for WEEKS!! Disgusting....we do not have any SANE ADULTS running anything anymore!
Even a ponytail can be a hazard. Better be a short one.
