IT'S the second most deadly parasitic disease - only malaria is more lethal.
And schistosomiasis - also known as snail fever - could be set to invade Europe's shores.
"Around 25-30% of humans are currently infected with at least one parasitic worm species," writes Karl Hoffmann, Professor of Parasitology at Aberystwyth University, for The Conversation.
"The diseases they cause can be devastating.
"Worm infections can lead to diverse and chronic conditions such as scarring of the eyes and blindness, swelling of extremities and immobility, blockage of digestion and malnutrition, anaemia and tiredness.
"They can also increase an individuals risk of developing cancer and AIDS."
Schistosomiasis currently affects hundreds of millions of people each year, causing thousands of deaths.
Caused by schistosome flatworms, the infection occurs when people come into contact with a type of freshwater snail that produces the worms.
These worms then penetrate the skin and live in the blood vessels surrounding the intestines or bladder of the individual.
When the eggs of these flatworms become trapped in human organs, they can cause inflammation, blindness, scarring, anaemia and ultimately, death.

Bad news for the French...
Diversity is our strength!
I would suspect that in practice a major factor is that Europe has had better sanitation that almost all of Africa dating back almost to the Roman Republic.
Likely reasons include: The life cycle of this worm requires a certain species or genera of Snail that is not present in Europe. The Snail needs to be excreted from it’s human host into waters with snails and even semi-modern sanitation does a good job of preventing this.
It’s quite complicated and fascinating. The parasite requires ants, snail puke, livestock like sheep, goats, blades of grass, and still fresh shallow pools of water within 200 yards. Only then can it jump into hosts. Break any one component and no transmission.
I have accidentally injected myself with sp much ivermectin that i am absolutely parasite free. I must have had 500mls of it shot into my hands and arms while wrestling livestock for foot trimming, shearing, immunizations, and tagging. No I’ll effects. Anelthemics rich blood.
Ivermectin is a human treatment for it as well.
Euroweenies will blame Trump..
Lemme guess. Brought in by immigrants from Iceland.
Usually snails eat parasite eggs. The eggs hatch in the snail. Something eats or comes in contact with the snail and gets infected. Parasites have a pretty predicable lifecycle. It’s also difficult to stop in the wild.
I read about the horrors of schistosomiasis when I was in sixth grade. But it was comforting to know that it was only found in subsaharan Africa.
Europe has been trying to commit suicide for centuries. Maybe now she'll succeed. Whether by sword wielding conquerors or killer worms, what difference does it make?
America could send her sons to die yet again to save Europe from suicide... Or she could send an army of physicians and tons of antimicrobials... But frankly, why bother? If Europe is determined to commit suicide, she'll find a way, sooner or later.
No vetting, no quarantine, no medical exams = lots of disease.
I was going to come on here and say Hillary but your’s is better.
Talking about bad news worms, I read recently on www.NaturalNews.com
that some bad news worms have been found in Salmon, I think it was Alaska salmon. FYI
