Billy Dee Williams is returning to a galaxy far, far away.
The actor, who famously played the galactic gambler Lando Calrissian, will reprise the role for Star Wars: Episode IX, the next Star Wars installment from Lucasfilm.
Chatter about Williams joining the production, which begins later this summer, increased in recent days when the actor bowed out of an upcoming sci-fi and pop culture convention citing a conflict with a movie schedule. Sources confirm to The Hollywood Reporter that Williams will indeed be returning to the Star Wars big screen for the first time since 1983s Return of the Jedi. The character made his suave debut in Empire Strikes Back.
Williams has in recent years returned to the role that fuels his appearances on the convention circuit, voicing Calrissian in various cartoon series and video games.
The character is one of the more popular personages in the Star Wars universe and appeared in a major way in this years Solo: A Star Wars Story. Donald Glover slipped on the cape to play a younger Calrissian.
Episode IX is being directed by J.J. Abrams and will reunite Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac and Adam Driver, among others. Keri Russell is one of the new additions to the cast. The film opens Dec. 20, 2019.
Put a cork in it already. The first Star Wars should have been the last. Great ending. Final. Done. Over. Finished.
Well, now that he’s “fabulous” I’m not surprised they’re bringing him back.
Got to meet Williams years ago. Hung out with him a bit. Classy guy.
It is too late to save the trilogy.
I won’t be seeing it. Smug little PC warrior J.J. Abrams said Star wars fans hate women, so he’s clearly decided to market to a different audience. Good luck.
Good thing they are bringing him back so we can see how he dies too.
The first one was fine. I never cared much for all the sequels and prequels and backstory stand alone movies.
I guess the way Hollywood is, if you have a big hit movie, the pressure is immense to make sequels and turn something into a franchise.
I wanna see Star Wars: Bollywood Musical 2 before I die...
That is all I ask.
And sex.
Bollywood Musical 2 before I die and sex.
And a nice steak dinner.
All I want before I die is Bollywood’s Star Wars Musical, sex, a steak dinner and a bottle of really nice wine...
And a foot massage.
All I want...
That’s interesting.
The original Star Wars was a one-off, not a tent-pole to prop up a studios existence.
Every film after it has tried to catch the lightning in the bottle again. Sometimes, they actually caught a spark or two. But they depend so much on these films doing doing spectacularly, and so much effort is put into promoting them and keeping attention on them, that there can never be another.
The next Star Wars will come out of left field, like the original. Nobody will be looking for it or expecting it. But it will be something everyones been wanting all along. It wont be the distillation of some safe, politically-correct studio formula, thats for sure.
And maybe like the original, itll be something the the nerds around us and in each of us will catch onto first. Then it will be derided as naive and juvenile (while admittedly romantic and fun) while also being a guilty pleasure despite that. Then it will be accepted into the culture and the studio snakes will catch it, poison it, and squeeze the lifeblood out of it like theyre doing with Star Wars now.
That’s kind of my attitude about it also.
Good luck with that, JJ.
They ground SW’s into the ground.
This is just a desperation move to appease angry, insulted fans.
i was going to say, they ran out of people to kill?
Are you kidding? Empire Strikes Back is considered the greatest sequel in movie history. Well, maybe after T2: Judgement Day.
Exactly! Over done garbage.
There was a cartoon of an emaciated Harry Potter cow with a frightened expression as JK Rowling headed to milk it with several empty buckets to fill.
The SW cow is even more skeletonlike. And then theres the new Star Wars Land af Disneyland to promote!
