Bunch of rich white folks who can afford to get away from it all. They'll buy into the crypto currency to live in the utopia, but then go to their home office to keep up with their investments on Wall St. Of course, all applicants will be screened, I'm sure and only the handpicked will be allowed to purchase. With those picks, they'll be no crime but I'm sure they're planning on having some legit security on the island utopia to protect the residents.
Wonder how utopian it would be if French Polynesia rescinded the deal unless Thiel promised to set aside 20-30% of the spots to some Section 8 recipients, muslim refugees and some MS13 El Salvadorans?

The Globalists are still banking on a massive One World Government. But I think we are far more likely to end up in a world of smaller social/economic/political units. City-States of one size or another. Look at California: some people want it to be three states. Look at our union of 50 states: Does New England really belong? They don’t want to be part of America; they hate America.
We may see floating islands, orbital facilities, and small geographic regions all claiming sovereignty. By 2100, this world may be a very different place.

I expect they will have laws that restrict defense of their new country, right?

I wonder where they'll get power from? Solar? What about water? Where will the sewage go? This sounds like a very pricey development to handle all of those concerns, and I'm not sure how it could be justified by people who are supposedly so eco-friendly.

What is interesting is who those “rich white folks” are going to use to do the necessary labor for their utopia. Where will that worker class be housed, or fed? How will they be paid, and what will their wages be enough to buy in this utopia? It would hardly be a utopia if the difference between the residents and their workers is what I suspect it will be.

Unless this thing is way offshore, it will be part of France. When push comes to shove, France will be calling the shots.

Well, I’m sure you’re against all those setasides, so what’s wrong with Thiel creating his own mini state with none of that?
Personally I’m all in favor of these mini-experiments in governing. That’s what the founders envisioned when they gave the states most of the powers for each to run things as they saw fit. Of course over the years the feds have managed to usurp most of those powers.
