He was transferred again to learn to fly F4U Corsairs in Goose Isle, Michigan and logged a few hours in the seat but the war coming to end. As Bob once said " I was a naval aviator, a fighter pilot. I completed all facets of my training, including my qualifying landings on a carrier. I was all ready to go, and when the enemy heard that I was headed for the Pacific, they surrendered. That was the end of World War II."

One of his best scenes was on the golf course in Caddyshack.

Happy Gilmore wasn’t memorable. Bob Barker’s part was.

Timing is everything it seems. Like Barker my uncle was trained up and the war ended before he was ever deployed. The difference is my uncle signed up in 1942 and was sent by the Army to college to become a petroleum engineer and had to agree to a four year post degree commitment to serve. The war ended right before he graduated and by the time he got out Truman was drastically cutting troops so the Army waiver his requirements for four years beyond graduation and discharged him. Timing is everything, as I said.

I remember the Johnny Carson episode where George Gobel said about being a flight instructor in Oklahoma said: If you remember, no Japanese aircraft ever made it past Tulsa.
